Let\u2019s break it down.<\/p>\n<h2>The Balaji thesis: from digital gold to onchain everything<\/h2>\n<p>Balaji starts by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/balajis\/status\/1949403245811822628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointing to<\/a> the obvious: <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> and similar assets are already \u201cdigital gold,\u201d securing trillions of dollars onchain. Wherever there is an internet connection, Bitcoin\u2019s blockchain records exactly who owns what, in a consensus that transcends politics and geography. As Balaji explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo matter what political faction you\u2019re in, everyone agrees on the raw fact of who owns what amount of BTC.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The concept here is simple: blockchains provide unified, politically neutral property ledgers.<\/p>\n<h2>Stablecoins and the onchain asset explosion<\/h2>\n<p>He then extends the logic. Stablecoins have achieved legal recognition in several countries, and if onchain currency is legal, other assets naturally follow suit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere\u2019s a legal path for onchain stocks, onchain bonds, and every other type of financial asset,\u201d says Balaji.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The implication: expect equities, bonds, and even physical commodities to become digitally represented and traded peer-to-peer on blockchains.<\/p>\n<h2>Physical property becomes cryptographic<\/h2>\n<p>But cryptography doesn\u2019t stop at financial assets. Balaji points to the rise of smart locks and digital access control as a sign that even physical property like houses, cars, and planes will be governed by cryptography. He notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAny door can be secured in this way. The door to a plane, to a train, to a boat, to a building. Any door can be secured onchain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Imagine a world where your car isn\u2019t started by a physical key, but by a digital signature representing a cryptographic proof of ownership.<\/p>\n<h2>Securing all capital<\/h2>\n<p>This digital signature-based security can be extended to nearly all capital assets:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAny piece of capital equipment, from cranes to drones can be similarly secured.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As society progresses towards automation with humanoid robots, self-driving cars, and delivery drones, the argument is that all these assets will become part of the onchain cryptographic order.<\/p>\n<p>Balaji acknowledges some exceptions: personal consumables such as food or clothing won\u2019t be secured onchain. But he suggests that these make up a negligible part of global value.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor everything else, for 99%+ of what\u2019s valuable, for every financial asset and every capital asset, we will secure it onchain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Why cryptography? Security and trust<\/h2>\n<p>The rationale for this radical shift is security. Traditional computer systems, even those run by the Pentagon, are routinely hacked. In contrast, \u201cscaled public blockchains do not\u201d get hacked in the same catastrophic ways.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, putting property registries, access controls, and asset ownership onchain becomes the only way to guarantee robust, global, censorship-resistant ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Balaji envisions a \u201ccode-based order on the internet, a new kind of global economic union\u201d powered by blockchain technology.
