Nasdaq<\/a> filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)<\/span> on July 16<\/a><\/strong> to add staking to BlackRock\u2019s<\/a> iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA<\/a>) exchange-traded fund (ETF).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rule change would add a detailed \u201cstaking\u201d section permitting BlackRock to stake Ethereum (ETH<\/a>) directly or through one or more trusted staking providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BlackRock would treat received rewards as income, and the firm must hold the staked coins in arrangements consistent with a<\/span> May statement<\/a><\/strong> by the SEC Division of Corporation Finance on certain protocol staking activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, the asset manager must also obtain either a counsel opinion or US government guidance on federal tax treatment before it starts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, in the event of slashing or forking, BlackRock will not subsidize or absorb incoming losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nasdaq stated that its proposal would enable ETHA to capture returns while operating under defined constraints intended to protect shareholders and the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Competitive queue and deadlines<\/strong><\/h2>\n

BlackRock joins a queue of issuers that have asked regulators to let their US-based spot Ethereum products earn protocol rewards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cboe<\/a> seeks authority for Fidelity\u2019s<\/a> FETH<\/a>, Franklin Templeton\u2019s<\/a> EZET<\/a>, Invesco Galaxy\u2019s<\/a> QETH<\/a>, and 21shares\u2019<\/a> CETH<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On NYSE Arca, Bitwise<\/a> seeks approval to stake the ETH held in its ETHW<\/a>. At the same time, Grayscale<\/a> seeks the same approval for its ETHE<\/a> and mini trust<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart<\/a> reacted to the Nasdaq submission on X,<\/span> saying<\/a><\/strong> it was \u201cabout time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first final deadline for prior filings is in October, while the deadline for Nasdaq\u2019s filing on BlackRock\u2019s ETF is in early April.\u00a0<\/span>However, Seyffart believes it is unlikely for the SEC approval to take that long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Flows support issuer push<\/strong><\/h2>\n

US-listed spot Ethereum ETFs attracted<\/span> more than $726 million in net inflows<\/a><\/strong> across nine funds on July 16, marking a daily record.<\/span><\/p>\n

ETHA led allocations with $499.2 million, marking a record for daily inflows into the fund, representing nearly 69% of the total.<\/span><\/p>\n

The heavy inflows may indicate that institutional investors are betting on Ethereum\u2019s fundamentals, such as its infrastructure for stablecoins and tokenized assets.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
