Optimality aims to achieve lower latency and overhead, keeping Ethereum competitive while maintaining its decentralization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin illustrated the effort with four research tracks already under review. The first is a three-step-finality (3SF) protocol that delivers rapid block finality in a compact codebase, while the second is aggregated post-quantum signatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A third research track focuses on zero-knowledge virtual machines that enable verifiable execution, with a data-layer refactor that merges blobs through erasure coding, rounding up the tracks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drake connected those tracks to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-foundation-releases-first-1ts-outlining-roadmap-to-tackle-security-challenges\/\">existing strategy items<\/a>, including user-experience upgrades, scalability work, and full-chain sampling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The &#8216;Lean' banner<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Drake laid out several near-term proposals under the \u201clean\u201d banner, including lean staking, which would strip validator duties to the essentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lean verifiability would let low-power devices confirm blocks with modest bandwidth. A lean crypto approach would reduce the protocol\u2019s reliance on multiple primitives, favoring a single hash function and post-quantum schemes wherever possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also promoted \u201clean specs,\u201d breaking logic into small modules, and \u201clean formal verification,\u201d starting with zk-VMs and signature aggregation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coratger noted the alignment between these ideas and active engineering work, such as Fork-Choice enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL), zkEVM pilots, and beam roadmap prototypes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He reported that session participants acknowledged the difficulty of achieving optimality but viewed the payoff as worthwhile, especially as rollups and centralized sequencers reshape Layer 2 processing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Foundation response<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ethereum-foundation\/\">Ethereum Foundation<\/a> co-executive director <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/tomasz-stanczak\/\">Tomasz Sta\u0144czak<\/a><\/span>\u00a0described<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Drake\u2019s presentation as a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tkstanczak\/status\/1933196318563848350\">forward-looking synthesis<\/a> of current projects and longer-range research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanczak wrote that many ideas will proceed to testing while others will evolve, calling the roadmap an \u201cunifying theory\u201d rather than an immediate directive.
