He noted that because these <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/europol-spanish-police-dismantle-mafia-crypto-bank-laundering-funds-across-continents\/\">crimes often span multiple jurisdictions<\/a>, no single agency can address the issue alone.<\/p>\n<p>Considering this, Ho-yin highlighted the need to expand partnerships across the financial, academic, and law enforcement sectors to address these cross-border <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/french-authorizing-probe-binance-again-for-money-laundering-and-unlicensed-activities-report\/\">money laundering risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor David Srolovitz, HKU\u2019s Dean of Engineering, echoed this and highlighted the importance of combining technical innovation with regulatory enforcement. He said that by bringing together experts from different fields, Hong Kong can better address the complex challenges of financial crime in the digital era.<\/p>\n<h2>Global concerns about money laundering rise<\/h2>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s push to strengthen crypto oversight comes amid broader global concerns. The borderless nature of digital assets makes them an attractive tool for criminals seeking to move funds discreetly.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trmlabs.com\/resources\/reports\/all-roads-lead-to-china?utm_campaign=Brand%5B%E2%80%A6%5D&utm_activity=All-Roads-Lead-To-China&utm_activitytype=Report\">report<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/trm-labs\/\">TRM Labs<\/a>, some Chinese underground banks, operating through informal channels known as <em data-start=\"2477\" data-end=\"2487\">fei qian, <\/em>have become key facilitators of crypto-based money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>These groups have established close links with global organised crime syndicates, including Mexican drug cartels.
