Transactions on the network will utilize wrapped XRP (wXRP) as the native gas token.<\/p>\n<h2>How the sidechain works<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0Axelar network will function as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axelar.network\/blog\/ripple-and-axelar-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exclusive bridge<\/a> for transferring assets, including the XRP required to create wXRP, between the XRPL mainnet and the new EVM sidechain. The architecture connects XRPL to the more than <a href=\"https:\/\/peersyst.com\/case-study\/xrp-ledger-evm-sidechain-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">69 other blockchain ecosystems<\/a>\u00a0supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axelar.network\/\">Axelar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sidechain operates on a Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus mechanism, selected for performance and efficiency. Its targeted metrics are over 1,000 transactions per second and transaction costs below $0.01.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure network integrity, the sidechain's code underwent a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.to\/ripplexdev\/strengthening-xrpl-evm-sidechain-key-takeaways-from-informal-systems-security-audit-4dme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">security audit<\/a> by Informal Systems\u00a0in February 2025. The audit identified and led to the resolution of one critical issue related to a Cosmos SDK module, with other findings being of low risk.<\/p>\n<p>This initiative represents a strategic effort to attract developers from the larger EVM ecosystem and provide new avenues for applications on the XRP Ledger. By lowering the barrier to entry, the sidechain may foster a more diverse application environment for XRPL\u2019s user base, which holds\u00a0over six million wallets.<\/p>\n<p>The use of wXRP for transaction fees introduces a new demand mechanism for the XRP token, tying its utility directly to the activity level on the EVM sidechain. According to a post from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Peersyst\/status\/1932634097366548969\">Peersyst<\/a>, projects including Strobe Finance, Vertex Protocol, and Secured Labs are already building applications.<\/p>\n<p>The firm also reported that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Peersyst\/status\/1931700642327708074\">87 new entities<\/a> with no prior involvement in the XRP ecosystem are now contributing\u00a0on the testnet, suggesting the potential for broad ecosystem growth upon the mainnet's release.<\/p>\n<p>The project's structure as a sidechain allows these new capabilities to be introduced without altering the XRPL mainnet's core protocol, which remains optimized for payments.
