{"id":482247,"date":"2025-05-27T22:45:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T21:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=482247"},"modified":"2025-06-09T00:06:31","modified_gmt":"2025-06-08T23:06:31","slug":"cetus-seeks-sui-community-nod-to-unlock-162m-to-make-users-whole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cetus-seeks-sui-community-nod-to-unlock-162m-to-make-users-whole\/","title":{"rendered":"Cetus seeks Sui community nod to unlock $162M to make users whole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sui-based protocol Cetus said on May 27 that it<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CetusProtocol\/status\/1927434763125531045\">can reimburse every user affected<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by its May 22 exploit if <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/sui\/\">Sui<\/a> token holders approve the return of frozen funds in an upcoming on-chain vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cetus said in a May 27 social media post that its cash and token reserves, combined with a secured loan from the Sui Foundation, are enough to cover the $61 million in assets the attacker bridged to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SuiNetwork\/status\/1927439620091834569\">May 27 post by Sui<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the loan applies only to the amount bridged outside Sui, not to the remaining $162 million that validators have already frozen on the network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An upcoming community vote will decide whether to unlock the tokens that were frozen by validators after the exploit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DEX has asked the Sui community \u201cfor full support\u201d to ensure it can make the affected users whole. Cetus also said it would publish a step-by-step repayment plan regardless of the vote\u2019s outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cetus exploit is the ninth-largest hack in the crypto industry in terms of the amount stolen, according to the Rekt News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rekt.news\/leaderboard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>leaderboard<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Full recovery possible<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sui Foundation confirmed the arrangement in a separate post, describing the loan as an \u201cextraordinary measure\u201d designed to restore user balances beyond what Cetus could fund alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sui Foundation officials stated that the community vote proposal will appear on-chain \u201cshortly\u201d and that validators remain ready to move the frozen tokens if holders approve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Foundation executives added that the loan proceeds are in escrow, and deployment could occur as soon as the smart contract community concludes the proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cetus paused all contracts on May 22 after an attacker <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sui-based-cetus-protocol-suspends-operations-following-260-million-oracle-exploit\/\">exploited a flaw in the protocol\u2019s pricing logic<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On-chain data indicates that the breach resulted in $223 million worth of tokens, with $61 million transferred to Ethereum and $162 million halted by Sui validators. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cetus <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cetus-posts-5m-bounty-for-hackers-id-amid-centralization-concerns-on-sui-freeze\/\">contacted the exploiter through on-chain messages<\/a>, offering a $6 million bounty in exchange for the funds bridged to Ethereum. However, the protocol did not receive a reply.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project developers said they \u201cdeeply regret the impact\u201d and will \u201cbegin recovery immediately\u201d once they finalize the mechanics for distributing reimbursements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cetus reiterated that rebuilding user trust remains its top priority and is committed to providing periodic progress updates.
