{"id":482076,"date":"2025-05-27T09:56:39","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T08:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=482076"},"modified":"2025-05-27T09:56:39","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T08:56:39","slug":"tether-invests-5-billion-profit-into-us-companies-while-holding-120-billion-in-us-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-invests-5-billion-profit-into-us-companies-while-holding-120-billion-in-us-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Tether invests $5 billion profit into US companies while holding $120 billion in US debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/tether\/\">Tether<\/a>, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT, has disclosed that it has reinvested around $5 billion of its profits into US-based companies and infrastructure over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"78\" data-end=\"449\">In a May 26 post on X, Tether CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/paolo-ardoino\/\">Paolo Ardoino<\/a> disclosed that the company has made significant investments across American businesses and emerging technologies, reflecting what many described as a &#8220;pro-America&#8221; strategy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"451\" data-end=\"851\">According to Ardoino, the investments cover a range of sectors, including decentralized media, neuroscience, and Bitcoin mining. Notable recipients include Rumble, a video-sharing platform; Blackrock Neurotech, a brain-computer interface (BCI) startup; and several Bitcoin mining firms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/swan-bitcoin\/\">Swan Bitcoin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1304\">In one of its most significant moves, Tether acquired over 100 million Class A shares of Rumble for <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tethers-775-million-rumble-investment-sparks-stock-35-surge\/\">$770 million in January to support decentralized content platforms<\/a>. Since then, the USDT issuer has collaborated with Rumble to launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/rumble-non-custodial-bitcoin-wallet-to-launch-in-q3-in-challenge-to-coinbase\/\">non-custodial Bitcoin and stablecoin wallet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1304\">Another $200 million was funneled into <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-invests-200-million-to-reach-new-ultimate-goal-of-putting-computers-in-peoples-brain\/\">Blackrock Neurotech in April 2024<\/a>. The funding has reportedly supported medical breakthroughs, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-ceo-predicts-brain-implants-will-be-mainstream-within-20-years-after-blackrock-neurotech-breakthrough\/\">efforts to restore patient communication abilities<\/a> through brain-implanted devices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1817\">The company is also backing Bitcoin infrastructure. It has started <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-commits-hash-rate-to-ocean-mining-extending-mining-operations-on-africa\/\">allocating current and future hashrate to OCEAN<\/a>, a mining pool operated by Mummolin Inc., a Wyoming-based firm. However, its relationship with Swan Bitcoin has become strained, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-claims-swan-bitcoin-was-reckless-escalates-legal-war-after-mining-venture-fallout\/\">legal dispute now underway.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"451\" data-end=\"851\">Tether's US treasuries<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond these equity investments, Tether has built a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/insights\/tether-was-7th-largest-us-treasury-holder-in-2024-surpassing-nations-like-canada-and-norway\/\">prominent position in US Treasuries<\/a>. The company holds over $120 billion in total exposure through direct purchases, money market funds, and reverse repo agreements.<\/p>\n<p>This makes Tether the 19th-largest holder of US Treasury bills globally, surpassing Germany's $111.4 billion exposure, based on US Treasury Department <a href=\"https:\/\/ticdata.treasury.gov\/resource-center\/data-chart-center\/tic\/Documents\/slt_table5.html\">data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The assets serve as its stablecoin reserves and are critical in maintaining USDT's dollar peg. Most are reportedly held at <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/cantor-fitzgerald\/\">Cantor Fitzgerald<\/a>, a leading US financial institution.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Tether's aggressive investment strategy follows a record-breaking year. In January, the firm reported over <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-discloses-83758-btc-holdings-and-13-billion-profit-in-2024\/\">$13 billion in net profits for 2024<\/a>. These earnings have strengthened its balance sheet and allowed for further expansion in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-bids-for-control-of-south-american-1-million-mwh-renewable-energy-company-adecoagro\/\">agriculture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-takes-larger-stake-in-juventus-triggering-fan-token-surge\/\">sports<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-expands-into-film-and-news-with-investment-italian-media-company-be-water\/\">media<\/a> despite ongoing scrutiny from regulators.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2311\">While USDT remains the largest stablecoin and the third-biggest crypto asset by market cap, regulatory uncertainty in the US has led Tether to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-to-issue-separate-stablecoin-for-u-s-despite-getting-comfortable-with-the-genius-act-ceo-says\/\">consider<\/a> issuing a separate stablecoin tailored to comply with forthcoming rules.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tether, the issuer of the world&#8217;s largest stablecoin USDT, has disclosed that it has reinvested around $5 billion of its profits into US-based companies and infrastructure over the past two years.
