{"id":481964,"date":"2025-05-26T14:00:19","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T13:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=481964"},"modified":"2025-05-26T13:20:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T12:20:14","slug":"pakistan-to-allocate-2000-mw-for-bitcoin-mining-and-ai-data-centers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pakistan-to-allocate-2000-mw-for-bitcoin-mining-and-ai-data-centers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan to allocate 2,000 MW for Bitcoin mining and AI data centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pakistan will allocate 2,000 megawatts of electricity for <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> mining and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-25\/pakistan-allocates-2-000-mw-capacity-to-power-bitcoin-mining?embedded-checkout=true\">report<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pakistan-forms-new-crypto-council-to-regulate-blockchain-and-digital-assets\/\">Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC)<\/a> overseeing the project confirmed that three underutilized coal-powered plants, currently operating at just 15% capacity, will be repurposed to support this initiative.<\/p>\n<p>This development is part of the government's broader efforts to legalize crypto, attract foreign investment, and modernize its tech infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/daniel-batten\/\">Daniel Batten<\/a>, a Bitcoin mining researcher, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DSBatten\/status\/1926666047941206144\">said<\/a> that if half of the allocated power goes toward BTC mining, assuming they operate in near-optimal conditions, the country could generate around 17,000 BTC annually.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the development could trigger regional competition, suggesting India might follow suit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pakistan-ramps-up-crypto-friendly-efforts-with-plans-for-energy-efficient-bitcoin-mining\/\">Pakistan's crypto ambitions<\/a> have increased significantly, with several notable moves and projects initiated in the past several months.<\/p>\n<p>The government has begun laying regulatory groundwork for the emerging industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/pakistan-taps-binance-co-founder-changpeng-zhao-to-steer-its-journey-into-digital-finance-innovation\/\">appointed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/binance\/\">Binance<\/a> founder <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/changpeng-zhao\/\">Changpeng Zhao<\/a> as an advisor to the PCC, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-founder-meets-with-donald-trumps-world-liberty-financial-team-amid-global-push\/\">partnered<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/world-liberty-financial\/\">World Liberty Financial<\/a> (WLFI), a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>-related DeFi venture, to promote blockchain adoption.<\/p>\n<h2>IMF pressure hangs over Pakistan<\/h2>\n<p>Pakistan's strategy puts it in the same group as several other countries embracing digital assets despite active loan agreements with the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The country recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2025\/05\/09\/pr-25137-pakistan-imf-completes-1st-rev-of-eff-arrang-and-approves-req-for-arrang-under-rsf\">secured<\/a> a $2.1 billion IMF package to support economic recovery, yet remains committed to expanding its crypto footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew Sigel, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/vaneck\/\">VanEck's<\/a> head of research, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/matthew_sigel\/status\/1926713334830661755\">pointed out<\/a> that other nations with similar approaches include <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/el-salvadors-president-bukele-commits-to-bitcoin-despite-imfs-funding-demands\/\">El Salvador<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-miner-marathon-partners-with-kenya-to-capitalize-on-excess-energy\/\">Kenya<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethiopia-harnesses-low-cost-energy-for-bitcoin-mining-from-renewable-sources\/\">Ethiopia<\/a>, and Argentina. These countries have pursued several Bitcoin-related projects while under IMF programs.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/former-imf-chief-economist-believes-crypto-is-a-rising-threat-to-the-u-s-dollars-dominance\/\">warned<\/a> that exposure to Bitcoin could pose financial risks, particularly when governments are directly involved in buying or mining the asset.<\/p>\n<p>Still, none of these countries have halted their adoption plans. El Salvador stands out as a key example.
