{"id":480874,"date":"2025-05-19T23:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T22:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=480874"},"modified":"2025-05-19T23:51:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T22:51:58","slug":"doj-launches-probe-into-coinbases-insider-driven-data-leak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/doj-launches-probe-into-coinbases-insider-driven-data-leak\/","title":{"rendered":"DOJ launches probe into Coinbase&#8217;s insider-driven data leak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating how attackers infiltrated <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase<\/a> in their recent customer data breach incident, Bloomberg News reported on May 19, citing a person familiar with the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase chief legal officer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/paul-grewal\/\">Paul Grewal<\/a> confirmed the company is cooperating with federal law enforcement and intends to pursue legal action against those responsible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grewal added that Coinbase is also working with &#8220;other US and international law enforcement agencies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the exchange declined to comment further on the matter.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Extortion attempt and internal breach<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase disclosed in a<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-resists-20-million-bitcoin-ransom-demand-after-insider-led-data-breach\/\">May 15 statement<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that attackers bribed third-party contractors and employees in India, who had privileged access to the firm's internal support systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The breach affected less than 1% of its monthly active users and compromised names, contact details, identity documents, and partially masked financial information. Core infrastructure, such as private keys, authentication credentials, and cold wallets, remained uncompromised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the internal data leak allowed the attackers to pose as Coinbase personnel, enabling subsequent social engineering scams that targeted customer accounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/brian-armstrong\/\">Brian Armstrong<\/a> said the attackers demanded a $20 million ransom in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a>. The company refused to pay the ransom and instead announced it would establish a $20 million reward fund for information leading to the identification and prosecution of the perpetrators.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Up to $400 million in remediation costs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase disclosed<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/how-an-insider-led-breach-sparked-a-costly-scam-at-coinbase\/\">in a Form 8-K filing<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it is still assessing the full financial cost of the breach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preliminary estimates place remediation expenses and user reimbursements between $180 million and $400 million. The company said it would compensate all affected users and terminate the compromised individuals involved in the breach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/zachxbt\/\">ZachXBT<\/a> has been monitoring phishing and social engineering schemes targeting Coinbase users.
