Japanese IT firm TIS will support the technical build-out during the experimental phase.<\/p>\n<h2>Japan\u2019s broader digital push<\/h2>\n<p>SMFG is the parent company of Japan's second-largest bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), which manages approximately $1.7 trillion in assets.<\/p>\n<p>The lender has gradually increased its involvement in blockchain over the past several years. In 2022, the bank co-launched Token Business Lab with HashPort to explore enterprise use cases for NFTs, including experiments with non-transferable identity tokens.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, SMBC joined Japan\u2019s other banking giants \u2014 Mitsubishi UFJ and Mizuho \u2014 in a pilot focused on stablecoin applications for international settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s stablecoin policy is among the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/japan-ushers-in-stablecoin-era-with-sbi-vc-trades-landmark-license-and-planned-usdc-listing\/\">most advanced globally<\/a>. Legislation passed in 2022 formally classified fiat-backed stablecoins as \u201cElectronic Payment Instruments,\u201d restricting issuance to regulated banks and licensed financial entities.<\/p>\n<p>Regulators are now <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/japans-open-house-to-accept-doge-sol-and-xrp-for-real-estate-amid-friendlier-regulatory-climate\/\">weighing further reforms<\/a> that would bring digital assets under securities law, including protections against insider trading.<\/p>\n<h2>Growing TradFi interest in stablecoins<\/h2>\n<p>Globally, traditional finance institutions are signaling a growing interest in stablecoin adoption, with several major financial institutions considering launching their own stablecoins.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, regulatory momentum is building, with recent calls from President Donald Trump for legal clarity on dollar-pegged tokens. Bank of America recently <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-financial-giants-bank-of-america-look-to-enter-stablecoin-market-as-paypal-advances-pyusd\/\">expressed interest<\/a> in entering the stablecoin market, contingent on regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p>The stablecoin sector has continued its exponential growth amid rising adoptions worldwide.
