{"id":469803,"date":"2025-03-14T21:53:02","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T21:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=469803"},"modified":"2025-03-14T21:53:02","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T21:53:02","slug":"excessive-fundraising-weakens-vc-confidence-in-crypto-startups-despite-regulatory-improvements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/excessive-fundraising-weakens-vc-confidence-in-crypto-startups-despite-regulatory-improvements\/","title":{"rendered":"Excessive fundraising weakens VC confidence in crypto startups despite regulatory improvements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venture capital funding for crypto startups has yet to rebound in line with recent regulatory clarity in the U.S. despite showing signs of recovery in the months following President <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump's<\/a> election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to analysts, the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> excessive capital inflows during 2021 and 2022 did not result in proportional returns for investors, which has damaged confidence and reduced the VC money inflow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Underwhelming performance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MV Global partner Tom Dunleavy<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dunleavy89\/status\/1900524714612670504\">said<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the crypto industry raised excessive capital relative to the number of high-quality projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He noted that venture firms optimized for short-term token gains rather than fostering long-term businesses in an emerging sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunleavy added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;We should be seeing the 21\/22 type raises today as the industry now has a very clear long term trajectory but daily mark to market price action has destroyed sentiment.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average monthly VC funding for crypto startups was $3 billion in 2021 but slid almost 50% to $1.88 billion the following year. The trend has continued with 2024 only recording $801 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, in December 2024, the amount VCs invested in crypto companies surpassed $1 billion for the first time since April of the same year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The threshold has been consistently surpassed since then, with $1.2 billion raised in January and $1 billion last month. However, the growth remains subdued considering the improving regulatory environment in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Failed projects and investor skepticism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mickey Hardy, chairman of Arcadia,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MH3NFT\/status\/1900562899455660084\">echoed<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dunleavy\u2019s assessment, highlighting that many projects funded during the peak fundraising years are no longer operational or have abruptly ceased activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has led to increased caution among investors, as past failures have amplified skepticism regarding the viability of new crypto startups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Hardy said he believes venture capital activity will resume once the market stabilizes, noting Bitcoin\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) strengthened position as a recognized asset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunleavy also acknowledged that funding could return but with a significant lag.
