It has also been accepted that the crypto space oscillates between altcoin and bitcoin seasons, suggesting more investing opportunities down the line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A deluge of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/memecoins\/\">memecoins<\/a> flooded the market as well, serving as a more robust gambling system (compared to online casinos). As crypto space lost $530 billion market cap over the last 30 days, it is prudent to examine its fundamentals once again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Is such a concept as \u2018altcoin season\u2019 meaningful moving forward? Is there more to cryptos than cyclical speculation? To answer those questions, we must first remind ourselves of narratives past.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\">The Merge Foreshadowing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">During the evolution of the crypto space, Bitcoin became de-facto the only proof-of-work digital asset worth considering, following Ethereum\u2019s <i>The Merge<\/i> in September 2022. As a transition from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS), The Merge represents a cleavage in blockchain philosophies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While Bitcoin\u2019s proof-of-work (PoW) requires computational resources, Ethereum\u2019s PoS eliminates such barriers in order to boost transaction speed and efficiency. In other words, Bitcoin further differentiated itself as a store of value, while Ethereum focused more on cost-effective blockchain utility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At first glance, this may seem perfectly complementary, but there are several underlying problems that eventually reared their heads.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">PoW is more amenable to decentralization contrasted to PoS, which relies on the cumulative wealth of validators in the \u201crich get richer\u201d feedback loop.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">PoS is divorced from hard assets, such as energy and machines, while Bitcoin is grounded in them.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">And because Bitcoin\u2019s PoW is part physical, part digital, it is less reproducible than PoS as a commitment mechanism. In turn, this contributes to Bitcoin\u2019s network effect and safeguards against devaluation in the long run.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Altogether, the PoW-PoS bifurcation translates into PoS fragmentation. If PoS-based assets, and PoS-based platforms competitive to Ethereum, are more reproducible, they can be launched with minimal upfront costs. With this foundation, there is no single altcoin asset to cling onto. Ultimately, with a low barrier of entry, this led to the fragmentation of the crypto market across <a href=\"https:\/\/messari.io\/screener\"><span class=\"s1\">+34,000 digital assets<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">From the Bitcoin-Ethereum perspective, as the two largest digital assets by market cap, PoS-led fragmentation manifests as a corrosive effect on Ethereum price level.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_469709\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-469709\" style=\"width: 1241px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-469709\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ethusd-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1241\" height=\"854\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ethusd-.jpg 1241w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ethusd--300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ethusd--1024x705.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ethusd--768x529.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1241px) 100vw, 1241px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-469709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Performance of Bitcoin (BTC) vs Ethereum (ETH) since The Merge on September 22, 2022. Image credit: Cryptoslate via TradingView<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">To put it differently, Bitcoin\u2019s key features, PoW and scarcity, are reinforcing Bitcoin fundamentals. In contrast, Ethereum suffers from network effect erosion from competing PoS chains, which offer similar functionality and incentive structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Moreover, the increased complexity outside of Bitcoin is creating a barrier to entry from new capital inflows. Who can spend time filtering thousands of assets and bet that they will have staying power beyond one year? Even sophisticated investors leveraging <a href=\"https:\/\/highstrike.com\/futures-trading-algorithms\/\"><span class=\"s1\">popular futures trading algorithms<\/span><\/a> often struggle to navigate the fragmented market effectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In fact, this is precisely why memecoin mania gained traction. The complexity and fragmentation of the crypto market lends itself to thinking of digital assets outside their fundamentals. Instead, focus is then on celebrity endorsements, humor, viral marketing, which often turns into pump-and-dump schemes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Inevitably, this creates a negative feedback loop:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Crowded and confused altcoin market births memecoins.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Rollercoasting memecoins inevitably erode trust in the altcoin market itself.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Legitimate innovative projects are then less likely to gain traction, as capital is misallocated.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p3\">But there is an even greater problem than that. Let\u2019s assume that this negative feedback loop created by memecoins doesn\u2019t exist. One has to consider if there even is a market for blockchain based solutions, as it was previously imagined.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\">Erosion of Underlying Fundamentals<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Through anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, governments around the world have expended great efforts to subdue the crypto ecosystem. Let\u2019s quickly remind ourselves of key promises before regulative sweeps took place:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Decentralization<\/b> as elimination of intermediaries &#8211; nearly everything is now intermediated through fiat rails, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-transfers-are-reportedly-suffering-restrictions-in-europe\/\"><span class=\"s1\">transfers from self-custodial wallets<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Financial inclusion<\/b> as access for the unbanked\/underbanked &#8211; it is still more convenient to use legacy banking than blockchain tech, which is inherently complex and requires digital literacy. According to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/cryptocurrency-payment-usage-will-jump-low-base-next-few-years--more-owners-convert-payers\"><span class=\"s1\">EMarketer report<\/span><\/a>, cryptocurrency payment penetration is hitting a wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although the number of crypto payment users is expected to rise by 82.1% from 2024 to 2026, this is from a tiny overall population base of only 2.6%. It may very well end up being the case that a digital dollar, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tether-ceo-touts-usdt-as-key-us-ally-in-maintaining-the-dollars-dominance\/\"><span class=\"s1\">stablecoin like USDT<\/span><\/a>, will subsume this effort entirely in place of a direct CBDC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Censorship resistance<\/b> as a guarantee that transactions cannot be reversed or intercepted by governments and organizations. Governments regularly pursue innovative mechanisms to cancel such efforts, from <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/congress-probing-crypto-industrys-systematic-debanking-under-biden-regime\/\"><span class=\"s1\">debanking<\/span><\/a> to the persecution of smart contract developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-court-overturns-treasury-sanctions-on-tornado-cash\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Treasury sanctions against Tornado Cash<\/span><\/a> were overturned in January, there is little indication that financial privacy will become a human right any time soon. In fact, indicators point in the other direction.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83d\udea8 BREAKING: The ECB\u2019s Digital Euro is set to launch in October. Key concerns include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Real-time transaction tracking<br \/>\n\u2013 Potential for payment blocking<br \/>\n\u2013 Automatic tax deductions<br \/>\n\u2013 Restrictions on cash withdrawals<br \/>\n\u2013 Programmable money with expiration dates<\/p>\n<p>They couldn\u2019t\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UvQH750gbl\">pic.twitter.com\/UvQH750gbl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr. Simon Goddek (@goddeketal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/goddeketal\/status\/1898704322889662846?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Altogether, this friction between blockchain-led solutions and governments leads to a contained market. And if a blockchain-based solution should be deployed, it will be under governments\u2019 terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lastly, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/why-web3-needs-to-think-like-amazon\/\"><span class=\"s1\">entire concept of Web3<\/span><\/a> is dubious as a decentralized, blockchain-based iteration of the internet. Elon Musk\u2019s DOGE revelations in the case of USAID funding clearly point to great efforts to push narratives, control narratives, suppress and de-legitimize dissent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A semantic, censorship-resistant Web3 is fundamentally at odds with governments\u2019 needs to maintain authority and legitimacy as they push various agendas. To think that established information proliferation nodes such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook would be allowed to erode in favor of Web3 would be foolhardy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Any government needs centralized nodes to maintain power. This was amply demonstrated in the case of the TikTok ban. Although this video reels app is vastly superior to YouTube shorts, a leverage was pulled to sanitize it and make it less relevant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Again, this is another factor that contains the blockchain space to a micro-niche instead of propelling it into mainstream expansion. With this in mind, blockchain space is still worthy of engagement.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\">Crypto Projects with Revenue-Generating Staying Power<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bitcoin will likely remain the main focus of crypto investing, owing to its unique, PoW-based network effect. Although the recent White House Crypto Summit was less bullish than expected, it was still positive in the long run. The decision to use seized bitcoins effectively removed this sell pressure from the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Likewise, President Trump seems to be serious about <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/trump-declares-end-to-war-on-crypto-vows-to-propel-america-to-bitcoin-supremacy\/\"><span class=\"s1\">ending the \u201cwar on crypto\u201d<\/span><\/a>. But looking at the crypto space from a purely innovative solutions perspective, which projects should retail investors consider during steep discounts?<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/press-releases\/sonic-labs-launches-the-sonic-mainnet-evm-compatible-verifiable-10000-tps-and-sub-second-finality\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Sonic (S)<\/span><\/a> &#8211; previously FTM, this is the top performing layer 1 blockchain network with sub-second transaction finality. This alone opens up new use cases such as high-frequency trading (HFT), micropayments, in-game economy, DEXs and IoT supply chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/project-reports\/near-protocol\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Near Protocol (NEAR)<\/span><\/a> &#8211; a layer 1 launching pad for dApps that has gained traction for use in AI initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/the-graph\/\"><span class=\"s1\">The Graph (GRT)<\/span><\/a> &#8211; also adjacent to the AI narrative, this protocol indexes data for AI use similar to how Chainlink (LINK) is used by DEXes to power decentralized financial services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/hey-anon\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Hey Anon (ANON) <\/span><\/a>&#8211; this early project could be the key in solving DeFi complexity (barrier to entry) by using conversational AI to manage DeFi strategies across chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/rendertoken\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Render (RENDER)<\/span><\/a> &#8211; former RNDR &#8211; with AI generation of assets, it is likely this solution will gain demand by monetizing GPU-based distributed rendering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">These five tokens should be considered as long play exposure during crypto market deflation. After all, it is unlikely that AI narrative will subside any time soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In terms of top 10 revenue-generation chains during the market slump, crypto activity is clearly on the side of low-friction payment chains (Tron) and general purpose, high-performing chains (Solana, Avalanche). But within the contained ecosystem, investors should focus on long term narratives &#8211; AI, infrastructure and chain performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A truly decentralized Web3 should be understood as a niche play that will be countered by deep pockets of Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta (META), as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RyanAFournier\/status\/1828212021260616089\"><span class=\"s1\">centralized node extensions of the USG<\/span><\/a>.
