{"id":468611,"date":"2025-03-07T00:08:52","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T00:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=468611"},"modified":"2025-03-07T00:13:15","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T00:13:15","slug":"sam-bankman-fried-denies-criminality-expresses-optimism-about-crypto-under-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sam-bankman-fried-denies-criminality-expresses-optimism-about-crypto-under-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Bankman-Fried denies criminality, expresses optimism about crypto under Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his appearance on Tucker Carlson's podcast, former <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ftx\/\">FTX<\/a> CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/sam-bankman-fried\/\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a> (SBF) shared that he does not view himself as a criminal and expressed optimism about the future of crypto under President Donald Trump's administration, among other topics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During the interview, SBF called his prison life a \u201cdystopian\u201d experience, revealed that the rapper Sean \u201cP. Diddy\u201d Combs had been \u201ckind\u201d to him and also shared details about his time behind bars.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journalist and show host Tucker Carlson questioned SBF about whether he was the biggest criminal in the crypto business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SBF said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;I don't think I was a criminal. Certainly, the answer to that is no. I mean, I think the DOJ [US Department of Justice] thinks that I may have been, but I don't share their viewpoint.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Political influence and Gensler<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBF was also questioned about why he thinks the Democratic party refused to aid him to avoid prison despite his donations. During his trial in October 2023,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/evidence-shows-bankman-fried-and-associates-gave-over-230m-to-friends-family-politicians-pacs-and-special-interests\/\">evidence revealed<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that SBF donated up to $119 million to politicians in the 2022 election cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He replied:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;By late 2022, I was giving Republicans privately as much as Democrats, and that started becoming known right around FTX\u2019s collapse. So, I probably played a role.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBF added that he contacted Democratic politicians but did not ask for favors, as most of them made their positions known and stayed away from him &#8220;as quickly as possible.&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he added that he &#8220;heard people saying third-hand nice things&#8221; about him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBF also commented on former SEC chair <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/gary-gensler\/\">Gary Gensler<\/a> and said his approach to crypto regulation was like &#8220;something out of a nightmare.\u201d He further shared that he had suspicions that Gensler had<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0political aspirations, which could have motivated him to take a strict stance toward crypto and be recognized by it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Former associates<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBF told Carlson that only a few of his former associates stayed with him after the scandal kicked off. However, he added that in retrospect, it makes sense that most people abandoned him considering the pressure they were under amid the high-profile collapse of FTX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>SBF said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Anyone who was close to me ended with a gun in their head. You know, being told they had two options, and one of them involved decades in prison. I think <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/ryan-salame\/\">Ryan Salame<\/a> is the saddest example of that.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBF said Salame was charged with \u201ctotally bogus crimes\u201d and that prosecutors threatened to charge his pregnant wife.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salame, who was FTX co-CEO, was<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ftxs-ryan-salame-to-serve-7-5-years-in-prison\/\">convicted to 90 months in prison<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the DOJ on May 28, 2024, after pleading guilty to seven fraud and conspiracy counts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-government-disputes-ex-ftx-exec-ryan-salames-bid-to-undo-guilty-plea\/\">contested the guilty plea<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying that he agreed to plead guilty because prosecutors promised to drop investigations into his wife, Michelle Bond. Eventually, Salame<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/salame-withdraws-dismissal-request-clears-way-for-bonds-campaign-finance-trial\/\">withdrew his contestation<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Optimism under Trump<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SBF also commented on the improving regulatory landscape under President <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He noted that the Trump administration is saying \u201ca lot of good things\u201d about the crypto industry that differ from former President <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\">Joe Biden's<\/a> stance and expressed optimism about its future in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Obviously, it's the follow-through that matters and that is the state we are in right now, which is &#8216;what will come of this?'
