But is it really that simple?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum today is no longer just an L1 blockchain; it\u2019s part of a much larger, modular ecosystem that includes a growing Layer 2 (L2) infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The real issue?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The market hasn\u2019t fully adapted to this modular paradigm yet. Many users still associate Ethereum with high fees and limited scalability, even though its technology has already evolved beyond those constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass adoption always lags behind innovation. If you\u2019re not deeply involved in tech, you likely don\u2019t perceive the modular architecture of the internet\u2014yet it\u2019s the backbone of the digital world. The internet itself never aimed to solve UX problems. Instead, <\/span><b>applications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abstracted the complexity, delivering a seamless experience to users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same must happen with Ethereum. As long as L2s feel like separate networks rather than native extensions of Ethereum, mainstream users will struggle to embrace them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So how do we make Ethereum more user-friendly?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Three critical issues need to be addressed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interoperability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 seamless interaction between L1 and L2<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>DApps & Wallet UX<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a user experience that doesn\u2019t require technical knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scalability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 improved network efficiency and lower fees<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until these challenges are fully resolved, Ethereum will continue to face resistance in mainstream adoption\u2014despite being technologically prepared for the next phase of growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article explores how these issues can be tackled and what it will take to position Ethereum for mass adoption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Interoperability: From Bridges to Seamless Compatibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Ethereum\u2019s biggest hurdles today is the lack of <\/span><b>native<\/b> <b>interoperability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between L2 solutions. Users still have to manually bridge assets between networks, a process that remains clunky and inconvenient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intent-based bridges like Across have significantly improved transaction speed, cutting down L1 \u2192 L2 transfers to 15 seconds and L2 \u2192 L2 swaps to under 5 seconds. However, these solutions are only viable for highly liquid assets. For memecoins and niche tokens, they remain out of reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why the Ethereum ecosystem is pushing toward <\/span><b>native interoperability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014first between L2 chains and, ultimately, between L1 and L2.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Basically, this is how the interoperability looks like in 2025:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Arbitrum:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cross-chain transactions and swaps <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/offchainlabs\/bringing-interoperability-to-arbitrum-and-ethereum-ba97ea99d9ff\">expected<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Q1 2025 (&lt;3 sec transfers).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Optimism:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.optimism.io\/stack\/interop\/explainer\">developing<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its own solution, but no set deadlines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>ZKSync:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tentative <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.optimism.io\/stack\/interop\/explainer\">launch<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by late 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Polygon Aggregation Layer:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.polygon.technology\/agglayer\/overview\/\">connecting<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chains built on Polygon CDK (v0.2).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most projects are still in development, but <\/span><b>Q2 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should see the first releases of ERC-20 cross-chain transfers between L2 clusters (Arbitrum, Superchain (Optimism), Elastic Chain (ZKSync), Agglayer (Polygon)).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, what is going to be the endgame for rollup adaptation are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethresear.ch\/t\/based-rollups-superpowers-from-l1-sequencing\/15016\"><b>Based rollups<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexbeckett.xyz\/composability-in-a-rollup-ecosystem\/\">redistribute<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MEV back to Ethereum L1 validators, integrating at the sequencer level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ethresear.ch\/t\/native-rollups-superpowers-from-l1-execution\/21517\"><b>Native rollups<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that restore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gwyneth_taiko\/status\/1891729359427277173\"><b>synchronous composability<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, executing transactions directly on Ethereum L1.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>When will this fully materialize?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No clear timeline yet. None of the existing rollups have confirmed plans to transition into Based or Native models. However, the direction is set\u2014Ethereum Foundation recently introduced an open-source framework for building intent-based bridges under the ERC-7683 standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For wallets, this is a major breakthrough. A unified integration standard means that <\/span><b>intent-based bridges like Across could see widespread adoption within the next 1-2 months.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This will drastically simplify asset transfers, making Ethereum\u2019s modular architecture feel far more seamless and intuitive for users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>dApps & Wallet UX: The Next Step Toward Mass Adoption<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragmentation between L2 chains isn\u2019t the only UX hurdle in the Ethereum ecosystem. The inability to batch transactions and sponsor gas fees for regular EOA wallets remains a major barrier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previous efforts to fix this\u2014most notably <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eips.ethereum.org\/EIPS\/eip-4337\">EIP-4337<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Account Abstraction)\u2014failed to see widespread adoption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason? <\/span><b>A lack of a unified standard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which slowed down integration. However, that\u2019s finally changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/EIPs\/blob\/master\/EIPS\/eip-7702.md\"><b>EIP-7702<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introduces a breakthrough solution by allowing EOA wallets to <\/span><b>temporarily function as smart contracts within a single transaction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This essentially creates a lightweight alternative to Account Abstraction, improving gas fee management and user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does this mean for users?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fewer transactions, greater efficiency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Approvals and swaps can now be bundled into a single action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flexible gas payments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Users will be able to pay transaction fees in tokens <\/span><b>other than ETH<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Enhanced security<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wallets can adopt temporary smart contract functionalities, unlocking advanced authorization mechanisms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EIP-7702 is expected to be integrated into wallets and dApps within two months of Pectra\u2019s launch. This estimate comes from Offchain Labs, whose representatives confirmed to me that updates will hit L2 chains within 1-2 weeks after Ethereum Mainnet (currently set for early April).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the <\/span><b>rollout of intent-based bridges and EIP-7702<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ethereum UX will <\/span><b>drastically improve<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wallets and dApps that <\/span><b>integrate these updates first<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will gain a significant competitive advantage, offering <\/span><b>a seamless cross-chain experience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uniswap has already <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Uniswap\/status\/1892594741818085640\">started<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014who\u2019s going to be next?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Scalability: How Pectra Pushes Ethereum\u2019s Limits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum\u2019s modular design splits its ecosystem into distinct layers\u2014Execution (L1), Data Availability (DA), and Layer 2 solutions\u2014each influencing the network\u2019s scalability. The key challenge? <\/span><b>Optimizing the right components first.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitalik Buterin recently <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vitalik.eth.limo\/general\/2025\/02\/14\/l1scaling.html\">emphasized<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this in his blog, arguing that even with Ethereum\u2019s focus on rollups, L1 scaling remains crucial. A 20% boost to L1 execution efficiency automatically improves all rollups, just as increasing DA blobs enhances transaction speed across L2s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s changing now?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Base <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/smyyguy\/status\/1892585101873033380\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>handled<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> peak loads during the Kaito airdrop, reaching 160 TPS with an average fee of $0.02.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum developers plan to double blobs from 3 to 6 in Pectra, further easing congestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Validiums now offer Solana-level speeds with sub-cent fees.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, DA expansion remains a bottleneck. Interest in EigenDA as an alternative scaling solution is growing. Some suggest that Ethereum roll ups might temporarily transition to validiums to accelerate scaling. Even Dankrad Feist (one of the most renowned Ethereum researchers) <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dankrad\/status\/1891878893973369083\">proposed<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jesse Polak, core developer of Base, becoming a validium to achieve faster growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the ecosystem is far from its final form, one thing is clear: <\/span><b>this is the best time to build<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ethereum\u2019s evolving infrastructure provides projects with seamless deployment and a significantly improved user experience, making mass adoption closer than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Conclusion: Ethereum on the Brink of a New Era<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum is undergoing one of the most transformative phases in its history. Fundamental shifts in <\/span><b>scalability, user experience, and interoperability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are already taking shape, setting the stage for a more efficient and accessible network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next <\/span><b>2-3 months will be pivotal.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> EIP-7702 is set to revolutionize wallets, making Ethereum interactions seamless and intuitive, while intent-powered bridges will eliminate friction in cross-chain transfers. These upgrades will redefine how users interact with the Ethereum ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market is shifting toward UX optimization, and competition between wallets and protocols for the best cross-chain experience is about to intensify.
