Additionally, when sending crypto to a self-custodial wallet, the user must sign a message to prove ownership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the user receives funds instead of sending them, the sender must be identified, including passport identification. This applies even if the user sends money to his Coinbase account from another source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hasu said he didn\u2019t try to avoid complying with Coinbase requirements, but he fears the whole account would be frozen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sam Harper, Argent's crypto general council member,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sharperonchain\/status\/1894356145013166288\">also reported<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the same issue. However, he said the message could not be signed from his self-custodial wallet, so he gave up on the transaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analyst known as Ignas<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DefiIgnas\/status\/1894368851724226934\">shared<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/okx\/\">OKX<\/a> Europe requires the same steps as Coinbase.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Hunsaker, co-founder of Monad Labs,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_jhunsaker\/status\/1894395302582378626\">said<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Europe is a scary place for crypto these days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Travel Rule potentially behind<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armani Ferrante, CEO of Backpack,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/armaniferrante\/status\/1894361717318033693\">said<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that these new compliance steps stem from the Travel Rule. He added that this is becoming \u201cmore and more common\u201d and mandatory in certain jurisdictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan Fish, also known by the crypto community as Cobie,<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cobie\/status\/1894360885717864564\">also highlighted<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the new compliance requirements to the Travel Rule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Travel Rule is a set of guidelines designed by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) mandating that financial institutions share certain information about the originator and beneficiary of wire transfers and other similar types of payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain developer Kris O'Shea also<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/krisoshea1\/status\/1894350244642451821\">reported<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he had to confirm the original sender when trying to deposit USD Coin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\">USDC<\/a>) into his Revolut card from a MetaMask wallet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Jan. 7, Delphi Labs co-founder Jos\u00e9 Maria Macedo<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/major-portuguese-bank-blocks-fiat-transfers-to-crypto-platforms\/\">shared<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Banco of Investimentos Globais (BiG), one of Portugal\u2019s largest banks, notified clients that fiat transfers to crypto platforms would be blocked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Macedo\u2019s report, the bank cited compliance with guidelines published by the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Banking Authority (EBA), and the Bank of Portugal about risks associated with offering digital assets.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto transfers are being restricted in Europe through heavy know-your-customer (KYC) procedures and blocks, potentially linked to the Travel Rule, according to several local reports.
