According to a report from The Information, the banks aim to provide safekeeping solutions to institutional investors, traders, and large funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bank executive told the report that State Street plans to roll out crypto custody services next year. The institution is one of the world\u2019s largest custody banks for traditional assets like stocks and bonds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the report mentions that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/bny-mellon\/\">BNY Mellon<\/a>, which already provides custody services for Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) and Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>), is looking to expand its offerings to include a broader range of tokens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional financial institutions are increasingly involved in crypto, and this involvement is not limited to banks. Coinbase is also reportedly in discussions with banks regarding crypto trading and custody collaborations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Citi expanding into crypto<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citi, the third-largest US bank by assets, is also exploring its entry into the crypto custody space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to sources cited in the report, the banking giant is considering a dual approach\u2014developing its own custody services while also forging partnerships with external firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This news follows Citi's successful\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240214190058\/en\/Citi-Collaborates-with-Wellington-Management-and-WisdomTree-to-Explore-Tokenization-of-Private-Markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">completion<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> of a proof of concept (PoC) on tokenizing<\/span>\u00a0private funds in collaboration with Wellington Management and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/wisdomtree\/\">WisdomTree<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot leveraged the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/avalanche\/\">Avalanche<\/a> Spruce institutional test Subnet, and ABN AMRO simulated the role of a traditional investor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citi said its experiment sought to address the inefficiencies of private markets by bringing a Wellington-issued private equity fund onto a blockchain network and embedding fund distribution rules within smart contracts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot also tested using private fund tokens as collateral in lending contracts with DTCC Digital Assets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Expected move<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/galaxy-digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galaxy Digital's<\/a> head of research, Alex Thorn, predicted that large banks like Citi would begin moving into crypto services due to the rising institutional interest in digital assets and the crypto-friendly regulatory environment under the current administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the firm's 2025 predictions, Thorn<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/intangiblecoins\/status\/1890458315152388516\">said<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the top four custody banks would add crypto-related services this year, with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) creating a pathway. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the four banks mentioned by Thorn, only <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/jpmorgan\/\">JPMorgan<\/a> has yet to announce crypto custody services.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State Street and Citi are considering offering crypto custody services.
