{"id":463592,"date":"2025-01-29T22:00:58","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T22:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=463592"},"modified":"2025-01-29T22:27:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T22:27:49","slug":"fed-chair-jerome-powell-says-banks-can-serve-crypto-clients-if-risks-are-managed-adequately","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/fed-chair-jerome-powell-says-banks-can-serve-crypto-clients-if-risks-are-managed-adequately\/","title":{"rendered":"Fed Chair Jerome Powell says banks can serve crypto clients if risks are managed adequately"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Reserve Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/jerome-powell\/\">Jerome Powell<\/a> stated that banks are free to serve with crypto, provided they effectively manage the associated risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his speech following the \u200eFederal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, Powell added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;The threshold has been a little higher for banks engaging in crypto activities, and that's because they're so new.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this cautious approach, Powell emphasized that the Fed remains open to innovation in financial markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the Fed chair quickly addressed allegations that crypto firms are having difficulties accessing banking services in the US, stating that the Fed is not interested in terminating legal customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Powell added that the Fed's role in examining the relationship between banks and crypto is to analyze banks. He also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledged the industry's regulatory challenges and said &#8220;a greater regulatory apparatus&#8221; would be helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not endorsing crypto, the Fed chair's brief mention led to optimism in the market, causing many assets to rally after the day's slump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) fell 1.5% to $101,417.24 after the FOMC revealed no interest rate cuts this month, potentially postponing further cuts until June.\u00a0However, during Powell's speech, especially after the mention of crypto, the BTC price rebounded 3.3% to touch $104,774.44.<\/p>\n<p>Based on CryptoSlate data, the flagship crypto was trading at $103,740 as of press time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tone shift<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fed chair's speech comes nearly three weeks after the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) interim Chair Travis Hill<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/fdic-interim-chair-calls-crypto-debanking-unacceptable-amid-concerns-over-operation-chokepoint-2-0\/\">acknowledged<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the agency\u2019s role in \u201cdebanking\u201d crypto firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Hill did not mention \u201cOperation Chokepoint 2.0,\u201d he cited crypto-related businesses losing access to banking services without reasoning, calling such efforts \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operation Chokepoint 2.0 is an alleged effort by former President <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\">Joe Biden\u2019s<\/a> administration to hinder the crypto industry growth in the US by making it difficult to access banking services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill also vowed to change the FDIC\u2019s course and prevent future cases in which banks sideline crypto firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is also probing the alleged cases of crypto firms being debanked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Jan. 24, the Committee<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/congress-probing-crypto-industrys-systematic-debanking-under-biden-regime\/\">sent a formal letter<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to several
