His work will focus on artificial intelligence, finance, financial technology, and public policy.<\/p>\n<p>Gensler will also become co-director at FinTechAI@CSAIL, an initiative within MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He will lead alongside Professor Andrew W. Lo.<\/p>\n<p>This program brings together industry players and MIT researchers to drive AI innovation in finance. Participants will collaborate on emerging technologies, address technical hurdles, and explore real-world applications for artificial intelligence in the sector<\/p>\n<p>Gensler's return to academia follows his controversial tenure at the SEC, where he pursued an <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-chair-gensler-defends-enforcement-approach-to-crypto-amid-criticism\/\">aggressive enforcement agenda<\/a> against major crypto firms, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/binance\/\">Binance<\/a>. Critics within the crypto space <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-industry-blasts-sec-chair-genslers-continued-arrogance\/\">accused him<\/a> of stifling innovation through regulatory crackdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Before leading the SEC, he held a faculty position at MIT Sloan and was previously chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), where he played a key role in reforming the massive $400 trillion swaps market.<\/p>\n<p>He officially <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-chair-gary-gensler-to-step-down-on-jan-20\/\">stepped down from the SEC on Jan. 20<\/a>, ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump's<\/a> inauguration as the 47th US president.<\/p>\n<h2>Community reaction to Gensler's return to MIT<\/h2>\n<p>Gensler's return to academia has sparked controversy, particularly among crypto advocates and some MIT alumni.<\/p>\n<p>Devin Walsh, an Executive Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/products\/uniswap\/\">Uniswap<\/a> Foundation, voiced disappointment over MIT's decision to rehire him. Walsh, an MIT Sloan graduate, argued that his return sends the wrong message to students interested in blockchain and emerging technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Walsh <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/devinawalsh\/status\/1884431012886896877\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A waste of time, tuition funds, and energy for any student hoping to study and support new and innovative technologies.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, pro-crypto lawyer Gabriel Shapiro highlighted Gensler's unpopularity within the industry.
