{"id":459411,"date":"2024-12-31T11:29:13","date_gmt":"2024-12-31T11:29:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=459411"},"modified":"2026-04-10T11:58:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T10:58:05","slug":"coinbase-ceo-urges-x-to-embrace-usdc-for-payment-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-ceo-urges-x-to-embrace-usdc-for-payment-integration\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase CEO urges X to embrace USDC for payment integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase<\/a> CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/brian-armstrong\/\">Brian Armstrong<\/a> has signaled interest in incorporating <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/circle\/\">Circle's<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\">USDC<\/a>\u00a0for payments on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/x\/\">X<\/a>, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>In a Dec. 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/brian_armstrong\/status\/1873485182776611149\">post<\/a>, Armstrong suggested that USDC payments would be a valuable addition to the platform and called on the X team to explore implementing this feature.<\/p>\n<p>This public appeal follows a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TravisBloom\/status\/1873466201047015795\">suggestion<\/a> by Travis Bloom, Coinbase's Lead Engineer, who previously questioned when X owner <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/elon-musk\/\">Elon Musk<\/a> would enable users to send and receive USDC on the Base network.<\/p>\n<p>Market observers noted that implementing such functionality aligns with X's broader ambitions to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/twitter-moving-ahead-with-payment-processing-service-crypto-integration-may-come-later\/\">introduce a payment system<\/a> and transform the social media platform into an &#8220;everything app.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In January, X revealed plans to roll out a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/elon-musks-x-platform-to-introduce-peer-to-peer-payments\/\">peer-to-peer payment service<\/a> similar to PayPal. While details on the service's currency\u2014whether fiat or crypto\u2014remained unclear, the platform has yet to launch the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>However, X has made significant strides in securing money transmitter licenses across the US. Its subsidiary, X Payments, is now licensed in 33 states, including California, Illinois, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<h2>USDC on X<\/h2>\n<p>USDC integration via <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbases-base-network-surpasses-1-million-daily-active-addresses-outpaces-competitors\/\">Coinbase-backed Base<\/a> could be a strategic move for X and the stablecoin.<\/p>\n<p>USDC ranks as the second-largest stablecoin globally behind Tether's USDT, with a focus on aligning with compliance standards. In 2024, USDC's total supply grew over 80%, surging from $24.2 billion to more than $43 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, its presence on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> Layer 2 networks also saw explosive growth. Circle's Peter Schroeder <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/peterschroederr\/status\/1873814990932582618\">stated<\/a> that USDC's supply of Layer 2 solutions, such as Base and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/arbitrum\/\">Arbitrum<\/a>, increased from $1.9 billion to $8.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Base alone achieved 26x growth in USDC usage, cementing its position as the leading Ethereum Layer 2 network by activity.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Base is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/base-outpaces-optimism-and-arbitrum-amid-coinbases-smart-wallet-debut\/\">fastest-growing Ethereum layer-2 solution<\/a>.
