{"id":459006,"date":"2024-12-26T00:00:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-26T00:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=459006"},"modified":"2024-12-25T22:23:25","modified_gmt":"2024-12-25T22:23:25","slug":"montenegro-court-rejects-do-kwons-extradition-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/montenegro-court-rejects-do-kwons-extradition-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Montenegro court rejects Do Kwon&#8217;s extradition appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montenegro's Constitutional Court unanimously rejected <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/terraform-labs\/\">Terraform Labs'<\/a> co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/do-kwon\/\">Do Kwon's<\/a> appeal regarding a verdict on his extradition over legal issues, Korea JoongAng Daily <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/news\/2024-12-25\/business\/finance\/Montenegro-court-dismisses-crypto-mogul-Do-Kwons-extradition-appeal\/2208677\">reported<\/a><\/strong> on Dec. 25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision clears the path for Montenegro's Justice Minister to determine Kwon's extradition destination, which is now expected to be the US due to the ministry's established stance, the report added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwon is also wanted in his home country of South Korea, where authorities have pursued him on charges linked to the high-profile collapse of the TerraUSD (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/terrausd\/\">UST<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/terra-classic\/\">Luna<\/a> tokens in May 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Battle for extradition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwon was apprehended in March 2023 after being on the run for months. He was attempting to travel through Montenegro using a counterfeit passport, further complicating his legal troubles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US has been particularly vocal in pursuing Kwon, seeking to hold him accountable for his role in the implosion of Terraform Labs' stablecoin ecosystem. A US court <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/us-court-issues-final-judgement-against-terraform-labs-do-kwon-imposes-4-5-billion-in-fines\/\">fined Kwon $4.5 billion<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June after<\/span><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/terraform-labs-do-kwon-reach-tentative-settlement-with-sec-to-end-civil-lawsuit\/\">failing to settle<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the civil lawsuit with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, South Korea has also signaled strong interest in prosecuting the crypto mogul, highlighting the global ramifications of the Terraform collapse.
