{"id":456821,"date":"2024-12-10T20:30:15","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T20:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=456821"},"modified":"2025-09-25T23:15:36","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T22:15:36","slug":"microsoft-shareholders-oppose-bitcoin-treasury-allocation-in-preliminary-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/microsoft-shareholders-oppose-bitcoin-treasury-allocation-in-preliminary-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft shareholders oppose Bitcoin treasury allocation in preliminary vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> shareholders<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DeItaone\/status\/1866528536917627044\">voted against<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the proposal to add Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) to its treasury in a preliminary vote conducted during the firm's annual meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/microsoft-shareholders-to-vote-on-bitcoin-investment-proposal-amid-board-opposition\/\">proposal<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, introduced by the think tank and shareholder National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), involved Microsoft considering allocating 1% of its treasury to BTC, which is roughly $800 million per the company\u2019s total cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments for the<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/investor\/earnings\/fy-2024-q3\/balance-sheets\">third quarter<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board of directors had already<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tier10k\/status\/1849562032783114438\">recommended opposition<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the proposal on Oct. 24, stating that the board had already considered alternative assets, including Bitcoin and other crypto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Microsoft not adding Bitcoin to its treasury for now, the company's board of directors stated that it continues to monitor trends and developments related to this market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bitcoin for treasuries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Dec.1, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/microstrategy\/\">MicroStrategy<\/a> executive chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/michael-saylor\/\">Michael Saylor<\/a> shared a<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/michael-saylor-tells-microsoft-board-bitcoin-could-boost-its-market-cap-by-5-trillion\/\">three-minute presentation<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he made for Microsoft's board of directors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saylor argued that Bitcoin is a fundamental piece of the next wave of technological innovation while also warning that failing to integrate BTC could leave Microsoft behind in the tech companies' race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also highlighted that adding BTC to Microsoft's <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treasury could grant the firm a $5 trillion market cap by 2034. Saylor proposed allocating the company's cash flows, dividend payouts, and stock buybacks to Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, MicroStrategy currently holds 423,650 BTC, which is likely why the company\u2019s shares soared 443% in 2024 to $371.98 as of press time. The stocks peaked at $473.83 on Nov. 20, a new all-time high after the \u201cdotcom bubble.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the NCPPR<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/amazon-shareholders-push-for-bitcoin-treasury-allocation\/\">introduced<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a similar proposal to Amazon, which involves considering allocating 5% of its assets to BTC.
