That\u2019s how I think of it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Powell\u2019s comments come amid heightened speculation about Bitcoin\u2019s growing influence in global finance. Crypto recently achieved a market capitalization of $1.92 trillion, surpassing silver, valued at $1.75 trillion, to become the world's eighth most valuable asset. However, it remains far behind gold, which holds an estimated market value of $18 trillion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the first time Powell has used this comparison to address Bitcoin. In 2021, the Fed chair<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/22\/business\/jerome-powell-says-the-fed-wont-issue-a-digital-currency-without-congressional-approval.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CCrypto%20assets%2C%20they're,rather%20than%20for%20the%20dollar.%E2%80%9D\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>said<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that crypto is not useful as a store of value due to its intrinsic volatility, with Bitcoin being &#8220;essentially a substitute for gold, rather than for the dollar.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under President <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\">Joe Biden's<\/a> administration, the Fed is accused of being pivotal in Operation Chokepoint 2.0, an alleged plan to hinder the progress of the US crypto industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, following a Fed mandate directed at crypto-friendly Customers Bank urging tighter risk management and compliance measures, Gemini co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/tyler-winklevoss\/\">Tyler Winklevoss<\/a> stated that the initiative &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/fed-escalates-operation-chokepoint-2-0-crackdown-against-crypto-winklevoss\/\">is alive and well<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>DeFi as ally<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Powell's conservative tone toward Bitcoin and crypto as an asset class, Fed Governor Christopher J. Waller<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/fed-official-touts-defi-as-ally-not-rival-to-traditional-finance\/\">recently praised<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> DeFi as an ally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Vienna Macroeconomics Workshop on Oct. 18, Waller argued that intermediaries are still fundamental for the financial markets. However, he acknowledged that DeFi applications presented technologies that offer efficiency to traditional financial instruments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He recognized the benefits of distributed ledger technology (DLT), tokenization, and smart contracts, which can enhance the speed and accuracy of financial transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, Waller<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/fed-governor-waller-questions-cbdc-utility-for-payments\/\">recognized<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at The Clearing House Annual Conference 2024 on Nov. 12 that central bank digital currencies (CBDC) are not helpful for payments, questioning whether the payments system has a problem that CBDCs could solve.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell dismissed the notion of Bitcoin as a replacement for the U.S. dollar, instead framing the leading crypto as a speculative asset comparable to gold.
