We still have a lot of work to do &#8211; but this marks a new beginning for us &#8211; read our blog \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Nc8FgC9uq8\">https:\/\/t.co\/Nc8FgC9uq8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Golem Network (@golemproject) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/golemproject\/status\/983676429715083265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 10, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Golem announced itself to the market as the \u201cAirbnb\u201d for computers, allowing users to \u2018rent\u2019 their unused computational power on its network, creating a worldwide networked supercomputer that provides proportional compensation for both GPU and CPU processing power.<\/p>\n<h2>Supercomputing By the Masses, For the Masses<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2310\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/golem-small-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/golem-small-cover.jpg 482w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/golem-small-cover-300x137.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/golem\/\">Golem<\/a> is a global, open sourced, decentralized supercomputer that anyone can access.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The concept of cloud supercomputing is not a new one to the computer science community \u2014 IBM, Nvidia and Amazon Web Services are just a few of companies providing rentable high-performance computing platforms for customers needing to crunch huge datasets.<\/p>\n<p>While these projects may be prohibitively expensive for a regular user, they have seen a massive market within the scientific community where time is an important factor.<\/p>\n<p>Communities supporting distributed computing have existed as far back as 1996, where projects such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mersenne.org\/\">Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search<\/a> relied on volunteers to donate their spare processing power and bandwidth to enable Mathematics researchers to compute Mersenne prime numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, other projects such as Seti@Home, Einstein@Home, and Climateprediction.net, have allowed users to users to work on the search for extraterrestrial life and generate climate prediction models.<\/p>\n<p>This ecosystem has seen a 21st-century overhaul with the <a href=\"https:\/\/boinc.berkeley.edu\/\">Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing<\/a> creating an app to allow Android and iOS users to contribute to a wide range of projects.<\/p>\n<h2>Beta Platform Opens Doors to Open Source Render Software<\/h2>\n<p>While Golem\u2019s long-term goal is to provide a more cost-effective open-source alternative to current cloud computing platforms, the team has chosen to narrow down their target specifically to graphics rendering during their Beta release. 3D rendering and CGI are incredibly resource-intensive tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Even with high-end cutting-edge hardware, rendering large workspaces can take days, requiring massive amounts of computing power to simulate a model\u2019s physics-based lighting interactions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44428\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44428\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/maxresdefault-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Users in the Golem marketplace can exchange GNT tokens for 3D rendering power in Blender<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Golem team has chosen this to be the testing ground for their software, allowing users to spend GNT tokens in exchange for rendering power on the free open source software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blender.org\/\">Blender<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Integration with this software allows developers to stress test the potential of the network while providing the necessary feedback to help streamline and debug the platform before integrating with projects in which errors in critical data could be potentially disastrous \u2014 such as protein folding or modeling chemical interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside this version update, Golem has <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.golemproject.net\/golem-bug-bounty-competition-7c30b355df51\">announced<\/a> a bug bounty competition. This will allow developers to test the new software and help the main team of Golem developers weed out any problems. Should any third party developer find issues in the software, they will be rewarded from a pool of 500,000 tokens. Based on the impact and likelihood of the bug, developers can earn up to GNT 50,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44426\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44426\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1004px-BOINC_logo_July_2007-300x125-copy-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BOINC\u00a0 created an app allowing Android and iOS users to contribute to a wide range of projects.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This kind of bug bounty mechanism is commonly used by software companies during public releases.
