This is why we are having this engagement with the legislators. We will regulate it in a way that is not injurious to the economic development of Nigeria.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Industry experts have been urging the Nigerian government to adopt this approach for a number of years. In 2021, when the government banned financial institutions from interacting with the crypto space, Tayo Oyedeji, a university professor, suggested that emerging economies should prioritize taxation over prohibition. The Nigerian SEC Director General Emomotimi Agama recently <a href=\"https:\/\/nairametrics.com\/2024\/06\/28\/nigerias-cryptocurrency-market-to-hit-52-5-million-in-2028-sec\/\">said<\/a> the country's digital assets market is estimated to be worth over $400 million.<\/p>\n<p>The legislative move comes as some crypto platforms begin collecting Value-Added Tax (VAT) on transaction fees. In July, KuCoin <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/kucoin-to-enforce-7-5-vat-on-nigerian-trades-amid-regulatory-changes\/\">announced<\/a> it would start charging a 7.5% VAT on all transaction fees in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 22px; font-weight: bold;\">Nigeria crypto<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the push for crypto regulation in Nigeria has intensified recently. Finance Minister Wale Edun urged the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to prioritize regulatory clarity for the industry.<\/p>\n<p>This follows a recent crackdown on crypto platforms, prompting global players like OKX to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/okx-to-exit-nigeria-amid-regulatory-hurdles-sets-august-deadline-for-users\/\">exit the Nigerian market.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Binance is facing legal action from Nigerian authorities for alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nigeria-drops-tax-evasion-charges-against-binance-execs\/\">money laundering and tax evasion<\/a>.
