{"id":429655,"date":"2024-06-29T02:00:18","date_gmt":"2024-06-29T01:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=429655"},"modified":"2026-04-16T14:58:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T13:58:58","slug":"coinbase-to-launch-cftc-regulated-futures-trading-for-5-altcoins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-to-launch-cftc-regulated-futures-trading-for-5-altcoins\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase to launch CFTC-regulated futures trading for 5 altcoins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase<\/a> Derivatives plans to launch margined futures contracts for Avalanche (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/avalanche\/\">AVAX<\/a>), Chainlink (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/chainlink\/\">LINK<\/a>), Polkadot (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/polkadot\/\">DOT<\/a>), Stellar (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/stellar\/\">XLM<\/a>), and Shiba Inu (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/shiba-inu\/\">SHIB<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/en-ca\/blog\/coinbase-derivatives-to-launch-new-cftc-regulated-crypto-derivatives\">June 28<\/a>, the service published an announcement and submitted filings to the CFTC to list each contract under a self-certification model.<\/p>\n<p>It intends to launch the products on July 15.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase Derivatives said it is the first US futures exchange to offer margined futures contracts for each token and is &#8220;excited to lead market accessibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We look forward to seeing the maturation of these derivatives contracts in a regulated market.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Coinbase Derivatives said the contracts will allow participants to manage risk, speculate on price movements, and invest with lower upfront capital requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange added that it will cooperate with the clearing house Nodal Clear, third-party futures commission merchants (FCMs), and retail brokers.<\/p>\n<h2>Price unaffected<\/h2>\n<p>The five tokens did not experience a significant price move on the news and have mostly been following the wider market downtrend.<\/p>\n<p>As of press time, LINK was trading at $13.7, down 4.3% over the past 24 hours. SHIB was down 3.7% and trading at $0.00002 per token, while DOT was down 1.9% to $6.19 per token.<\/p>\n<p>Two assets saw near-zero changes: XLM fell 0.3%, while AVAX gained 0.3%. The two tokens were trading at $0.09 and $27.98, respectively, as of press time.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase Derivatives traded $34 million<\/h2>\n<p>CoinGecko data indicates that Coinbase Derivatives experienced $34.1 million in 24-hour open interest and $971.8 million in 24-hour volume on June 28.<\/p>\n<p>The service already <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-derivatives-exchange-unveils-bitcoin-and-ethereum-futures\/\">offers various contracts<\/a>, including Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) and Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>) futures, BTC nano futures, and ETH nano futures. In April, it <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-secures-cftc-approval-to-list-dogecoin-futures\/\">added<\/a> Dogecoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/dogecoin\/\">DOGE<\/a>), Litcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/litecoin\/\">LTC<\/a>), and Bitcoin Cash (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin-cash\/\">BCH<\/a>) futures. It also offers crude oil and gold contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The US-focused derivatives service is distinct from Coinbase's international exchange.
