The NEO Council, which oversees the NEO blockchain framework<\/a>, posted its monthly update<\/a> for February and March. The month saw the conclusion of the first NEO development competition, which was co-organized with Microsoft China, updates to NEO\u2019s consensus nodes on TestNet, and the collaboration with various charities and community hackathons throughout Asia and Europe.<\/p>\n

NEO<\/a>, also known as “China's Ethereum” has enjoyed an incredible price rise despite China banning all crypto trading in September.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The first NEO development competition<\/a> ran for five months and gained 500 project sign-ups \u2013 50 of those projects passed the required quality checks and earned rewards from NEO\u2019s prize pool.<\/p>\n

The finalists for the project were Nachomen, Elight, Treatail, LootMarkets, and the Non-Fungible Token Smart Contract Template.<\/p>\n

The source codes for the finished projects have been released for free via Github.<\/p>\n

NEO Sponsor Giveback Plan<\/h2>\n

In addition to the NEO Development competition, the team also finalized its calculations for the NEO Sponsor Giveback Plan<\/a> that will give back to early sponsors in the amount equal to their original fiat contributions. Once the Sponsor Giveback Plan goes live, it will be the world\u2019s first ICO program to offer the full amount back to its original sponsors.<\/p>\n

The records and calculations for the plan were finalized, and a bulk send has been completed.<\/p>\n

The city of Zion and Dutch Telecom KPN runs Consensus Nodes on TestNet<\/h2>\n

The city of Zion<\/a>, a group of open source developers and KPN<\/a>, one of the largest telecommunication providers in the world, has now run consensus nodes on the TestNet for two months, with 100% uptime and smooth node upgrades.<\/p>\n

There were some obstacles that NEO had to resolve at the beginning of March due to P2P issues, including delayed block times, but this has now been resolved. Other issues stated by NEO include latency between consensus nodes during heavy traffic in China:<\/p>\n

We have also found significant latency increase to some of the consensus nodes during Internet traffic peak hours in China, and we have traced the root cause to the ISP servers. As this may affect consensus messages, we now plan to move affected consensus nodes to faster ISP's. To mitigate risk for future consensus message latencies, CoZ and KPN are scheduled to be voted in on MainNet after the move of these consensus nodes is complete.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

NEO Challenges and Hackathons<\/h2>\n

February also saw the first two hackathons for NEO: START Hack and HackCU, with prizes for the best overall project and winners for the NEO challenge.<\/p>\n

Polychain won the NEO challenge at START hack with its contribution to make charitable donations more trustworthy and reliable. Polychain<\/a> also won the overall prize among all challenges at START HACK.<\/p>\n

Another charitable project won the HackCU NEO challenge: NeoCharity<\/a>, which records all received tokens and queries to identify who transacted with a tagged account, while FixItChain<\/a> won the HackCU 1st Prize and Best Beginner Hack Prize.<\/p>\n

Winners of the Hackathons received a 500 GAS<\/a> prize, allowing the developers to either deploy their projects on the MainNet or used as seed capital.<\/h3>\n

Finally, NEO held its first individual Hackathon event in Taipei on March 11th, co-hosted with Blockcamp. NEOspace took first prize with a Smart Contract to lease office space, while second place was secured by Medchain, a project management platform for medical patient information.<\/p>\n
