{"id":422728,"date":"2024-05-31T03:30:17","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T02:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=422728"},"modified":"2024-05-31T13:05:03","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T12:05:03","slug":"balchunas-predicts-end-of-june-eth-etf-launch-as-grayscale-updates-s-3-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/balchunas-predicts-end-of-june-eth-etf-launch-as-grayscale-updates-s-3-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Bloomberg analyst predicts end of June ETH ETF launch as Grayscale updates S-3 statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bloomberg ETF analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/eric-balchunas\/\">Eric Balchunas<\/a> said on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricBalchunas\/status\/1795934675380109479\">May 30<\/a> that US spot Ethereum ETFs could launch in June amidst updated <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/blackrock\/\">BlackRock<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/grayscale-investments\/\">Grayscale<\/a> filings.<\/p>\n<p>Balchunas said there is a &#8220;legit possibility&#8221; that spot Ethereum ETFs will launch by the end of June. He added that an earlier mid-June launch was a &#8220;long shot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Balchunas said the latest date he expects the products to launch would be July 4.<\/p>\n<p>Balchunas' expectations are influenced by the timing of issuers' S-1 statements. He commented on BlackRock's May 29 S-1 <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrock-updates-s-1-filing-for-ethereum-etf-marking-step-toward-launch\/\">amendment<\/a>, which he noted did not include a fee and other vital data \u2014 making it a &#8220;next to final version.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grayscale also submitted an S-3 amendment for its fund on May 30, updating the fund to reflect a clear prohibition on staking.<\/p>\n<p>Both statements mark one of the final requisite steps before the funds can launch for trading.<\/p>\n<h2>Politics are at play<\/h2>\n<p>Balchunas' expectations regarding a launch date are partly related to the SEC's supposed political motivations for the funds.<\/p>\n<p>Balchunas argued the SEC's initial approvals have satisfied political needs, writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; &#8230; The political goal of not appearing anti-crypto has already been achieved by simply not rejecting [the ETFs]. No real reason to rush.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other industry members, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ark-invest\/\">Ark Invest<\/a> CEO and CIO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cathie-wood-says-eth-etf-approvals-were-political-praises-el-salvadors-btc-approach\/\">Cathie Wood<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase<\/a> institutional research analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-expects-30-to-40-chance-of-spot-eth-etf-approval-by-month-end\/\">David Han<\/a>, have similarly argued that the SEC approved the funds for political reasons.<\/p>\n<h2>More S-1 statements incoming<\/h2>\n<p>The Block reported that the SEC has asked other applicants to submit draft S-1 filings by May 31, after which the SEC will issue its first round of comments.<\/p>\n<p>Each applicant will then submit further amendments in response if needed.<\/p>\n<p>As of press time, all ETH issuers have submitted S-1 or S-3 registration statements. However, apart from BlackRock and Grayscale, only VanEck has submitted amendments since the SEC granted initial approvals for exchange rule changes ETFs on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-etfs-approved-aligning-eth-closer-to-commodity-in-industry-win-vs-sec\/\">May 23<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Balchunas' fellow Bloomberg ETF analyst, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/james-seyffart\/\">James Seyffart<\/a>, believes the SEC will take weeks or months to approve S-1 statements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas said on May 30 that US spot Ethereum ETFs could launch in June amidst updated BlackRock and Grayscale filings.
