Just after Bitmain announced the release of an <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitmain-f3-ethereum-miner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASIC miner for an &#8220;ASIC-Proof&#8221; Ethereum<\/a>, the Ethereum community proposed a hard fork to limit the ASIC's effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ethereum<\/a> is currently the premier altcoin and one of the first blockchains to enable smart contracts. A robust architecture, robust developer community, along with strong institutional support have made Ethereum a leading cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>However, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitmain-f3-ethereum-miner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">story was leaked<\/a> announcing that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitmain-developing-facilities-united-states\/\">Bitmain<\/a> was manufacturing an ASIC designed exclusively for ETHASH (Ethereum's consensus algorithm) the reaction was evident.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, The rumors were confirmed by Bitmain:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are pleased to announce the Antminer E3, world&#39;s most powerful and efficient EtHash ASIC miner. <br \/>Ordering limit of one miner per user and not available in China.<br \/>Limited stock, order here now: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zfw3afjJHs\">https:\/\/t.co\/Zfw3afjJHs<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/antminerE3?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#antminerE3<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SjHu2eUThp\">pic.twitter.com\/SjHu2eUThp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; BITMAIN [Not giving away ETH] (@BITMAINtech) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BITMAINtech\/status\/981169456411021312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Bitmain seems to care little about the philosophy behind Ethereum and appears to value profits at the expense of the security of the network. This attitude has not meshed well with the developers. The community is considering forking Ethereum to make it ASIC-proof even though there is a significant change planned for this year, the switch from PoW to POS, which would make that switch redundant.<\/h3>\n<p>In a rare display many of the leading cryptocurrency developers have been in agreement about something: ASICs are a problem that need to be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>A proposal posted on Ethereum's\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/EIPs\/issues\/958\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Github<\/a>\u00a0shows that 1027 developers agreed to perform a Hard Fork to avoid ASIC mining while only 42 opposed the measure.<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, Vlad Zamfir proposed a similar survey. The answer remained in favor of the fork.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Would you support a hard fork that obsceletes ETH ASICs? (Just wondering, this is not a proposal)<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Vlad Zamfir (@VladZamfir) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VladZamfir\/status\/979060233430552576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15765\" style=\"width: 204px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15765\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ethereum-vitalik-buterin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vitalik Buterin, the man behind Ethereum does not worry too much about Bitmain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This sentiment has also been strongly supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ethereum\/comments\/87ucsk\/would_you_support_a_hard_fork_that_obsceletes_eth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reddit community,<\/a>\u00a0even though Casper (PoS) is expected to be implemented within the year.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that both changes are so close together that some developers prefer to focus their efforts on perfecting <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ethereum-suprasses-1000-strong-crypto-market-launch-casper-test-net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ETH's PoS Algorithm<\/a> (The ultimate <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitmain-ethereum-asics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ETH ASIC<\/a> Killer). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/ethereum-asics-means-whats-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to Coindesk<\/a>, Vitalik Buterin said he was not particularly worried about the whole ASIC situation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I'm not convinced it's worth expending resources caring too much, except to push faster on Casper.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Bitmain may have been using its ETH ASICs before they marketed them.<\/h3>\n<p>As a result of the debate generated by the EIP (Ethereum Improvement Proposal), some analyses have emerged on the influence Bitmain could have on Ether prices. Very few provide encouraging results; the evidence shows that Bitmain has had a negative impact on the market.<\/p>\n<p>Reddit User CryptoBlockchainTech responded to the previously cited thread:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You have little understanding the way BitMain works. They use ASICs to mine coins long before they release them to the public. Take a look at the ETH difficulty chart over the last few months when it has been impossible to buy GPUs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The fork proposal is gaining traction but the change is delicate.
