At that time, the US government had sanctioned the crypto mixing tool for aiding entities like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/hackers-like-lazarus-continue-to-use-tornado-cash-despite-us-sanctions\/\">North Korea-backed Lazarus Group<\/a> in laundering their illegal proceeds.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling in Pertsev's case could have significant implications for the crypto sector, particularly as other Tornado Cash developers face <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/court-dismisses-coin-centers-tornado-cash-lawsuit-against-us-treasury\/\">trials in the United State<\/a>s. In August 2023, the Department of Justice (DOJ) brought charges against Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm, alleging money laundering and violations of US sanctions laws.<\/p>\n<h2>Crypto community reacts<\/h2>\n<p>Pertsev's conviction has riled up members of the crypto community, who are criticizing the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Pablito, the head of security research at Blockfence, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PabloSabbatella\/status\/1790352392879210586?t=tRV8Eqr3tajJ_881dJjCwg&s=19\">said<\/a> the ruling was a &#8220;sad day for privacy, crypto and open-source.&#8221; He added that &#8220;the war is not over. Privacy is a human right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Alexandre Stachtchenko, a web3 expert, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StachAlex\/status\/1790373832168972316\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This has gone too far. It is time to end this KYC and surveillance mess before it eats democracy itself.
