{"id":41431,"date":"2018-04-02T14:02:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T21:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=41431"},"modified":"2026-04-29T12:02:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T11:02:24","slug":"vitalik-buterin-ethereum-hard-cap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/vitalik-buterin-ethereum-hard-cap\/","title":{"rendered":"Vitalik Buterin Serious About Ethereum Hard Cap Proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April fools saw many joke announcements from the blockchain community, from CoinMarketCap ranking tokens in \u201cLambo\u201d value to a prank blog post from <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/vitalik-buterin-ethereum\/\">Vitalik Buterin<\/a> announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2018\/04\/01\/announcing-world-trade-francs-official-ethereum-stablecoin\/\">launch<\/a> of a new Ethereum \u201cstablecoin.\u201d One of Buterin\u2019s April fools statements, however, appears worth taking seriously \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> creator now seems to be earnest in his proposal of a hard cap on the supply of Ethereum tokens.<\/p>\n<p>Buterin published an <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/EIPs\/issues\/960\">Ethereum improvement proposal<\/a> on the 1st of April, floating the idea of a hard cap on the total supply of Ether:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn order to ensure the economic sustainability of the platform under the widest possible variety of circumstances, and in light of the fact that issuing new coins to proof of work miners is no longer an effective way of promoting an egalitarian coin distribution or any other significant policy goal, I propose that we agree on a hard cap for the total quantity of ETH.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The plan outlined a potential hard cap of <strong>120,204,432 ETH<\/strong>, or twice the total amount of Ether sold in the original Ether sale in 2014. While many crypto community members were quick to dismiss the proposal as another April fools day prank, Buterin took to Twitter to voice his genuine thoughts on the matter, classifying the proposal as a \u201cmeta-joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For those still wondering whether or not <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/z44anVrOuT\">https:\/\/t.co\/z44anVrOuT<\/a> was an April Fool&#39;s joke, the answer is: it was an April Fool&#39;s meta-joke. *The point* was seeing people argue about whether or not the proposal is &quot;real&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/980744740277661696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Hard Cap Proposal is &#8220;Very Real&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Following extended community discussion, Buterin clarified his position on the proposal, stating that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe proposal is very real in the sense that the words actually were written in the GitHub issue, and the arguments for it are real arguments.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In later statements, Buterin <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/980745388691922945\">elaborated<\/a> on the value of the proposition despite the semi-serious manner in which it was proposed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf the community wants fixed supply and people believe that EIP 960 is a good way to achieve that, then it should adopt the proposal. If the community does not, then it should not. This is true regardless of whether or not the original intent was in jest.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Buterin appears to have given his casual proposal more in-depth consideration, following up his original Tweet with a list of arguments in favor of a hard cap that includes a nod toward the potential negative long-term impact of inflationary tokens:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I do now believe that fixed supply is worth considering. Arguments:<\/p>\n<p>* With ASICs, PoW issuance fails at making coin distribution more egalitarian<br \/>* With PoS, PoW issuance not needed for security<br \/>* With rewards coming from rent+other burned fees, can have rewards without issuance<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/980746683481964545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Buterin\u2019s proposal appears to have been intended to spark increased community engagement \u2014 the Ethereum creator has expressed frustration with the current status of community support for the project, so the half-serious proposition appears to have been devised to catalyze discussion of the Ethereum project.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1. People do broadly support fixed supply<br \/>2. Community has gone a long way from &quot;are the core devs up high going to make this happen or not?&quot; closer to &quot;I don&#39;t care about the source, I think it&#39;s a good idea&quot;, but there&#39;s still a long way to go to get there.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
