This design prevents the proliferation of ASICs, as seen on the <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\">Bitcoin<\/a> network, and thereby increases the decentralization and security of the Ethereum network.<\/p>\n<h2>How Ethereum Achieves Memory Bounding<\/h2>\n<p>The Ethash algorithm relies on generating something called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Directed_acyclic_graph\">DAG<\/a>, otherwise known as the directed acyclic graph. Fetching the DAG from the computer's memory is the primary limiter on how fast a computer chip can execute the Ethash algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the DAG is based on the Ethereum's current blockchain length and grows in size in proportion to the size of the blockchain. The DAG is regenerated <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/wiki\/wiki\/Mining\">every 30,000 blocks<\/a> or approximately every five days at current block rates.<\/p>\n<p>As of today, the DAG file is <a href=\"https:\/\/investoon.com\/tools\/dag_size\">2.4 GB in size<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>An important thing to note is mining is limited by the DAG size. If a GPU's memory is lesser than the size of the DAG file, then it becomes impossible to mine cryptocurrency with that GPU.<\/h3>\n<p>This limitation in memory size also limits the scope of mining ASIC designers. There are some technical limitations that make building memory into cryptocurrency ASICs difficult.<\/p>\n<h2>Market Environment Surrounding Bitmain<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41190\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41190\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41190\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nvidia-logo-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nvidia-logo-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/nvidia-logo.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nvidia had a net income of $1.7 billion in 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This limitation in the Ethash algorithm makes it difficult to build an ASIC that is more cost-effective than a GPU. The primary chip designers in the mining space, Nvidia and AMD have an advantage in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these companies can leverage massive supply and logistic chains to reduce the cost of manufacturing chips.<\/p>\n<p>Chip manufacturing is incredibly capital intensive. Fabrication houses, the places where microchips are built, cost billions of dollars to design and construct. Only a few fabrication houses can produce the newest chips.<\/p>\n<p>All of these factors limit a new entrant to the market like Bitmain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41071\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41071\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41071\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/AMD-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/AMD-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/AMD-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/AMD.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AMD, a much smaller company than Nvidia, had a net income of $179 million in 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, Bitmain has become extremely profitable in a short amount of time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/02\/24\/bitcoin-mining-bitmain-profits\/\">According to Bernstein Research<\/a>, Bitmain made $3 to $4 billion in profit in 2017, more than Nvidia and AMD combined.<\/p>\n<p>With that much cash available to the company it is possible that they could break into the chip design niche for the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Build an Ethereum ASIC<\/h2>\n<p>ASIC chips only make sense if:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The dollars per GB of memory bandwidth is lower, and there is enough memory total to store the DAG file<br \/>\n<strong>dollars \/ (GB\/sec) &lt; GPUs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The chips are more power efficient assuming they are as powerful as available GPUs<br \/>\n<strong>watts \/ (GB\/sec) &lt; GPUs<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Has Bitmain successfully designed a chip that is cheaper or more power efficient than Nvidia or AMD's GPUs?<\/p>\n<h2>The Rumored F3 Ethereum Miner<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40158\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40158\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40158\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Antminer-S9-300x285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Antminer-S9-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Antminer-S9.jpg 355w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bitmain's Antminer S9 only uses 512 MB of memory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Recently the mining and Ethereum community on Reddit has been in an uproar over a rumored ASIC developed by the mining giant Bitmain.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Chinese news website, <a href=\"http:\/\/technews.cn\/2018\/02\/12\/bitmain-tsmc-dram\/\">Tech news<\/a>, the F3 Ethereum miner is said to have 72 GBs of DDR3 memory and has been in production since February.<\/p>\n<p>It is also said that Bitmain is establishing relationships with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tsmc.com\">Taiwanese chip manufacturers<\/a> to reduce the costs of these chips further.<\/p>\n<h3>According to China Tech News, the F3 is expected to launch in the Q2 or Q3 of 2018.<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41066\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41066\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/AMD-RX570-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/AMD-RX570-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/AMD-RX570.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AMD's RX570 is one of the most popular Ethereum mining GPUs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/EtherMining\/comments\/88igmr\/antminer_f3_confirmed_waiting_for_official\/\">In an unverified post on Reddit<\/a>, an image of an alleged F3 miner is seen in action. In the image, an F3 produces 1500 MH\/s, the equivalent of 50 RX570 GPUs.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the threat of the new ASIC, the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) repository has opened a thread with a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ethereum\/EIPs\/issues\/958\">referendum<\/a> to hard fork the Ethereum blockchain and to make Ethereum more ASIC-resistant.<\/p>\n<h3>Members of the Ethereum community say a hard fork of the Ethereum blockchain would hinder Bitmain's development of the F3.<\/h3>\n<p>One of Etheruem's lead developers, Vlad Zamfir, issued a poll on Twitter asking the community whether they would support a hard fork of the Ethereum blockchain to delay ASIC development.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Would you support a hard fork that obsceletes ETH ASICs? (Just wondering, this is not a proposal)<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Vlad Zamfir (@VladZamfir) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VladZamfir\/status\/979060233430552576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In the face of this recent threat, it appears that one thing that the community is in consensus about is hard forking the Ethereum blockchain.
