{"id":404453,"date":"2024-03-14T18:43:07","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T18:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=404453"},"modified":"2024-03-14T18:43:07","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T18:43:07","slug":"hackers-like-lazarus-continue-to-use-tornado-cash-despite-us-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/hackers-like-lazarus-continue-to-use-tornado-cash-despite-us-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Hackers like Lazarus continue to use Tornado Cash despite US sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blockchain analytics firm <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/elliptic\/\">Elliptic<\/a> revealed that the North Korea-backed hacker group Lazarus is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/blog\/north-korean-hackers-return-to-tornado-cash-despite-sanctions\">once again using<\/a> sanctioned crypto mixer <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tornado-cash\/\">Tornado Cash<\/a> to obfuscate its transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the group ceased using the crypto mixer after <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/erik-voorhees-urges-makerdao-community-to-exit-usdc-holdings-after-tornado-cash-sanctions\/\">US government sanctions<\/a>, which were imposed due to allegations of aiding criminals in laundering illegally obtained digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>Following the sanctions, Tornado Cash saw an 85% <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/north-korean-hackers-have-abandoned-tornado-cash-for-bitcoin-mixers-trm-labs\/\">decline<\/a> in overall volume as hackers began using alternatives like Sinbad.io and cross-chain bridges.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s5\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Why Lazarus group returned to Tornado Cash<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>However, the US government's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/u-s-treasury-sanctions-sinbad-mixer-citing-money-laundering-by-north-koreas-lazarus-group\/\">sanctions<\/a> on Sinbad.io for facilitating money laundering activities of North Korean state-sponsored hacking groups have limited options for Lazarus.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the group has turned to Tornado Cash, which has remained operational despite the US sanctions due to its decentralized nature.<\/p>\n<p>Elliptic also disclosed that the group recently moved approximately $13 million in funds stolen from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/justin-sun-linked-heco-bridge-and-htx-exchange-targeted-in-100-million-crypto-attack\/\">HTX Exploit<\/a>. These funds were transferred through Tornado Cash in over 40 transactions within the last three days, marking their first movement since the November 2023 incident.<\/p>\n<h2>What does this mean for the industry?<\/h2>\n<p>Lazarus Group's return to Tornado Cash reflects the government's inability to curb the mixer's operations effectively, according to Elliptic.<\/p>\n<p>The firm explained that Tornado Cash cannot be seized and shut down like centralized mixers because it operates through smart contracts on decentralized blockchains.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Robinson, the co-founder of Elliptic, added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The takedowns of centralized mixers by law enforcement agencies is perhaps pushing crypto laundering back towards decentralized alternatives.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/tornado-cash\">Data<\/a> from DeFillama further suggests a resurgence of the platform, with the total value of assets locked reaching $565 million, marking its highest level since the US government imposed sanctions in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This uptrend is also reflected in the protocol's native <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tornado-cash\/\">TORN<\/a> token, which was trading at roughly $2 as of press time \u2014 up 13% during the past day, based on <em>CryptoSlate<\/em>\u00a0data.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the crypto community has rallied behind the project's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/tornado-cash-developers-to-receive-funding-from-new-legal-defense-dao\/\">developers<\/a> after multiple governments, including the US, targeted them with legal action.\u00a0Notable crypto stakeholders like Coinbase have <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-finances-tornado-cash-users-lawsuit-against-us-treasury-department\/\">supported<\/a> the developers' legal defense.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic revealed that the North Korea-backed hacker group Lazarus is once again using sanctioned crypto mixer Tornado Cash to obfuscate its transactions.
