{"id":402270,"date":"2024-03-05T13:50:03","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T13:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=402270"},"modified":"2024-03-05T13:50:03","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T13:50:03","slug":"binance-ends-nigerian-naira-services-amid-government-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-ends-nigerian-naira-services-amid-government-crackdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Binance ends Nigerian Naira services amid government crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/binance\/\">Binance<\/a> said it would discontinue all services associated with the Nigerian local fiat currency, Naira (NGN), in a phased approach this week, according to a Mar. 5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/support\/announcement\/binance-to-discontinue-all-nigerian-naira-ngn-services-f9857dc2fea4448ba1fb8815d87d8144\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/richard-teng\/\">Richard Teng<\/a>-led crypto platform stated that its Nigerian users would not enjoy several NGN-related services, including deposits, withdrawals, conversions, spot trading, P2P, Auto-invest, and Binance Pay.<\/p>\n<p>While NGN deposits have ceased immediately, users have until Mar. 8 to withdraw their NGN assets. Post-deadline, Binance intends to automatically convert the remaining NGN balance to USDT at a fixed rate of 1 USDT for $1,515.13, the average closing price over the last seven days.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Binance will delist all NGN spot trading pairs and automatically close all open trading positions by Mar. 7.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange did not provide an official reason for its decision. Also, it has yet to respond to <em>CryptoSlate's<\/em> request for additional commentary as of press time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s2\">Binance's woes in Nigeria<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Binance's decision to cease NGN services can be attributed to its issues with the Nigerian government over the past weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian authorities have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-accused-of-manipulating-nigerian-naira-as-glitch-impacts-p2p-traders\/\">accused<\/a> the exchange of exacerbating Nigeria's foreign exchange challenges by usurping the Central Bank of Nigeria's role in setting exchange rates.<\/p>\n<p>While the crypto platform denies this allegation, the Nigerian government has <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-accused-of-manipulating-nigerian-naira-as-glitch-impacts-p2p-traders\/\">initiated a crackdown<\/a> on the firm, including a blockade of its website. In addition, the government reportedly detained two Binance staff members, and their passports were seized.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, recent reports have revealed that the Nigerian government is <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nigeria-reportedly-considers-10-billion-binance-fine-over-illegal-transactions-and-registration\/\">contemplating<\/a> imposing a $10 billion fine on Binance for its alleged infractions. However, Bayo Onanuga, an aide to the Nigerian President, <a href=\"https:\/\/gazettengr.com\/nigerian-govt-lied-no-discussion-about-10-billion-fines-we-wont-pay-ransom-or-damages-if-asked-binance\/\">denied<\/a> these reports, claiming that the authorities have yet to conclude the actions they would take on the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Nigerian lawmakers recently <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-ceo-richard-teng-asked-to-appear-before-nigerian-committee\/\">summoned<\/a> Binance CEO Richard Teng to appear before a committee over the exchange's alleged role in money laundering and terrorism financing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto exchange Binance said it would discontinue all services associated with the Nigerian local fiat currency, Naira (NGN), in a phased approach this week, according to a Mar. 5 statement.
