{"id":398562,"date":"2024-02-20T21:00:28","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T21:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=398562"},"modified":"2024-02-20T20:47:49","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T20:47:49","slug":"coinbase-international-exchange-hits-1-billion-in-daily-trading-volume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-international-exchange-hits-1-billion-in-daily-trading-volume\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase International Exchange hits $1 billion in daily trading volume"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coinbase\/\">Coinbase's<\/a> non-US exchange saw over $1 billion in daily trading volume on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brian_armstrong\/status\/1760003662771040536\">Feb. 20<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase International Exchange wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the last 24 hours [our] perpetual futures surpassed $1 billion in notional contract volume traded.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Coinbase CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/brian-armstrong\/\">Brian Armstrong<\/a> commented that it was the &#8220;first time&#8221; the non-US unit surpassed the $1 billion daily volume mark and noted that the service &#8220;continues to grow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Live data indicates that, as of 8:15 pm UTC, Coinbase International Exchange saw $1.098 billion in 24-hour perpetual trading volume.<\/p>\n<p>The amount includes an Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>) perpetual trading volume of $557.5 million, Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) perpetual trading volume of $425.9 million, and Solana (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/solana\/\">SOL<\/a>) perpetual trading volume of $50.6 million. Other listings have considerably lower trading volumes.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase International Exchange additionally hosts a spot market, which saw $12.4 million in 24-hour spot trading volume. Only Bitcoin and Ethereum are available for spot trading as of Feb. 20.<\/p>\n<p>The above data is separate from the company's main US exchange at Coinbase.com, which reported $3.2 billion in spot trading volume on Feb. 20.<\/p>\n<h2>Derivatives trading<\/h2>\n<p>Coinbase launched its international exchange with a focus on institutional perpetual trading in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-launch-international-exchange-for-institutional-traders-outside-us\/\">May 2023<\/a>. The company further extended the exchange's offerings to include <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-international-launches-spot-bitcoin-and-ethereum-trading-for-non-us-clients\/\">spot trading<\/a> in December. According to its website, the international exchange does not allow retail trading for now.<\/p>\n<p>News of rising volumes comes days after Coinbase <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-saw-3-1-billion-of-revenue-in-2023-with-one-third-of-that-total-in-q4\/\">reported earnings<\/a> for its main, US-based exchange. Though the firm did not report finances for its international exchange, it commented on the market in general, noting that crypto derivatives market made up 75% of all trading volume in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase added that the derivatives market is largely unregulated, and there is an opportunity for it to act as a trusted and regulated service provider in this domain.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange further noted that it began to launch derivatives for eligible US retail traders through a subsidiary, Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-to-offer-regulated-crypto-futures-to-us-customers-amid-ongoing-regulatory-battle\/\">late 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coinbase&#8217;s non-US exchange saw over $1 billion in daily trading volume on Feb. 20.
