{"id":39670,"date":"2018-03-26T20:23:55","date_gmt":"2018-03-27T03:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=39670"},"modified":"2026-06-12T10:12:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T09:12:06","slug":"coinbase-erc20-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-erc20-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase Announces ERC20 Token Support \u2013 What Will This Mean For Crypto?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Coinbase, one of the leading exchanges around the world and at one point, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recode.net\/2017\/12\/7\/16749536\/coinbase-bitcoin-most-downloaded-app-iphone\"><span class=\"s2\">the number one app on the iPhone App store<\/span><\/a>, has just <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/adding-erc20-support-to-coinbase-fe9cba6782b\">announced<\/a> that they will be providing support for ERC20 tokens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The announcement came today via their official Twitter account at approximately 6:38 p.m. GMT on March 26th<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, 2018: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re excited to announce our intention to support the Ethereum ERC20 technical standard for Coinbase in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>We are not announcing support for any specific assets today.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/glAjG42tZD\">https:\/\/t.co\/glAjG42tZD<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S1tPXJcTGH\">pic.twitter.com\/S1tPXJcTGH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Coinbase \ud83d\udee1\ufe0f (@coinbase) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/coinbase\/status\/978345541053530113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 26, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the article, the company states that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis paves the way for supporting ERC20 assets across Coinbase products in the future, though we aren\u2019t announcing support for any specific assets or features at this time. We are announcing this both internally and to the public as consistent with our process for adding new assets.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The implication of this announcement appears clear: Coinbase will be adding ERC20 tokens at some point in the future and the decision to make the announcement that they\u2019re adding ERC20 support on their platform confirms this. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What are ERC20 Tokens? <\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-273\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-273\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/small-cover-eth.jpg\" alt=\"Ethereum ERC20\" width=\"243\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/small-cover-eth.jpg 482w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/small-cover-eth-300x137.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most tokens that run on top of the Ethereum blockchain are part of the ERC20 standard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For those that aren\u2019t familiar with the term, &#8220;ERC20,&#8221; this refers to a host of tokens that were built through the smart contracting feature on <b>Ethereum\u2019s<\/b> blockchain specifically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is technically referred to as the &#8220;Ethereum standard for tokens.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What\u2019s the Big Deal? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What makes this so substantial is the fact that Coinbase will now be able to add many of the more popular coins in the crypto-sphere. So, tokens such as; <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/eos\/\">EOS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tron\/\">Tron<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/vechain\/\">VeChain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bnb\/\">Binance Coin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/omg-network\/\">OmiseGO<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/waltonchain\/\">Waltonchain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/0x\/\">0x<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/golem\/\">Golem<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/dragonchain\/\">Dragonchain<\/a>, and many more will be eligible for addition to the Coinbase platform. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For a full list of current ERC20 tokens, <a href=\"https:\/\/eidoo.io\/erc20-tokens-list\/\"><span class=\"s2\">click on this link. <\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">Which Ones Will They Pick? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thus far, Coinbase has not released a definitive list of the ERC20 tokens that they plan on adding to their platform. So, any statements by individuals asserting that they have definitive &#8220;knowledge&#8221; of such are more than likely false. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, they did confirm in their initial press release that they already have some coins that they have selected to be integrated into their platform and that their, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCustody team is evaluating a set of assets to support for deposits and withdrawals.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s important to note that their <b><i>Custody<\/i><\/b> team is an entirely different entity than the main exchange that most are familiar with, which is Coinbase (the one you can download from the app store). <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The partitions of the Coinbase network are; Coinbase (the app), <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/10-billion-institutional-money-ready-get-crypto\/\">Coinbase Custody<\/a>, GDAX (their exchange), and Coinbase Asset Management (where users can invest in an index). <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39678\" style=\"width: 301px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-39678\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gdax-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gdax-logo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gdax-logo-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Run by Coinbase, GDAX offers institutions and professionals the ability to trade a variety of digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more on a regulated U.S. based exchange.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For GDAX, the press release states that they will, \u201c\u2026wait for additional regulatory clarity before we <\/span><span class=\"s3\">decide<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> which ERC20 assets to support on GDAX. Support for ERC20 will also give us a path to enabling the safe recovery of customer ERC20 assets inadvertently sent to GDAX Ethereum addresses.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Coinbase states that the factors that will be considered for a Coinbase addition are; liquidity, price stability, and &#8220;other market health metrics.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In November of 2017, Coinbase published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gdax.com\/static\/digital-asset-framework-2017-11.pdf\">GDAX Digital Asset Framework<\/a>, a guide containing factors that it takes into consideration when listing new assets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Based on the above statements, there is no guarantee that a coin that is added to GDAX will also be added to the Coinbase main app. It appears that Coinbase Custody has a relatively low threshold for additions and that Coinbase Asset Management will receive additions automatically after they are first listed on GDAX. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Looking Forward<b> <\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17105\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-17105\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/brian-armstrong-coinbase.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/brian-armstrong-coinbase.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/brian-armstrong-coinbase-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brian Armstrong is the CEO and co-founder of Coinbase.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This move is one that investors expected from Coinbase as Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, stated several times prior throughout 2017 that the exchange was planning to add additional coins in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In context, this seems to be a logical move for the exchange. Given their platform\u2019s exposure as well as potential threats to their market share from companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/robinhood-launches-zero-fee-crypto-trading-really-free\/\">Robinhood<\/a>, a rival investment app that deals with traditional currency, this move is unsurprising while surprising at the same time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For the coins that do get listed on Coinbase, they should expect a vast surge in the amount of trading volume that they receive given Coinbase\u2019s reach and popularity among novice investors.
