{"id":38635,"date":"2018-03-22T18:42:08","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T01:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=38635"},"modified":"2026-04-26T15:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T14:04:12","slug":"cryptokitties-venture-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cryptokitties-venture-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"CryptoKitties Come of Age With $12 Million in Venture Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The team that made blockchain cute with <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/millions-dollars-worth-cats-infesting-ethereum-network\/\">CryptoKitties<\/a>, have raised <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/cryptokitties\/cryptokitties-receives-12m-in-funding-38322f90ab65\">$12 million<\/a> through venture capital funding.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson from Axiom Zen (the design studio that built the game) said that the proceeds will be used to &#8220;dramatically expand&#8221; the CryptoKitties team &#8220;as we figure out how to scale the blockchain to a billion consumers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CryptoKitties has raised $12M to make the blockchain purr. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1NQKSdVJNV\">https:\/\/t.co\/1NQKSdVJNV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CryptoKitties (@CryptoKitties) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoKitties\/status\/976260784920526848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>CryptoKitties took the community by storm last November, creating severe <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/millions-dollars-worth-cats-infesting-ethereum-network\/\">congestion<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">Ethereum<\/a> network as users traded customizable cats and bred their own hybrid species.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Axiom Zen said that the team aims to &#8220;make blockchain technology accessible and relevant to everyday consumers,&#8221; stating that &#8220;digital collectibles can act as a constellation for identity and self-expression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Since its launch, CryptoKitties has gained more than 1.5 million users, and accrued over $12 Million worth of sales.<\/h3>\n<p>Top cats, often affiliated with crypto celebrities, have sold for more than $200,000. They will join other investors including Fred Ehrsam (former founder of Coinbase); Naval Ravikant (CEO & founder of AngelList) and Mark Pincus (co-founder of Zynga).<\/p>\n<h3>The team has seen rapid development, and in January partnered with Garfield Developer Animoca Brands to launch CryptoKitties on mobile in China.<\/h3>\n<p>The wily cats managed to evade regulation by being categorized as a &#8220;cryptocollectible,&#8221; rather than a security. This meant the app could be launched in China despite a nationwide ban on cryptocurrency trading.<\/p>\n<p>Cryptokitties is not the only game on the blockchain, with other games like Spells of Genesis, on Bitcoin, and CryptoCelebrities on Ethereum, where players can trade popular avatars on the Ethereum network.
