The tokens were sent to an address associated with Bitfinex.<\/p>\n<p>The news was brought to the attention of the masses by Twitter satirist \u201cNot Tether Printer,&#8221; who pointed to a host of transactions on the <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/omni\">Omni network<\/a> in which an estimated 300 million tethers were sent:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just printed $300,000,000 USDT!<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lZVs0adPrg\">https:\/\/t.co\/lZVs0adPrg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Not Tether Printer (@tetherprinter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tetherprinter\/status\/976190406823063552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 20, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Tether has <a href=\"https:\/\/omniexplorer.info\/address\/3MbYQMMmSkC3AgWkj9FMo5LsPTW1zBTwXL\">minted 850 million Tether<\/a> Tokens since the beginning of the year, taking the total balance to <a href=\"https:\/\/wallet.tether.to\/transparency\">$2,248,665,722.36<\/a> at the time of writing, which represents a significant chunk of the overall cryptocurrency market cap.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38361\" style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38361\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/tether-300x265.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"283\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tether's total assets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As Tether is the most popular dollar-pegged cryptocurrency, it is a refuge for many in times of market instability. High demand during the January bear market saw the price of Tether jump up to <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/currencies\/tether\/\">1.03 USD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the few stable coins on the blockchain, many traders sold their Bitcoin for Tether instead of cashing out and paying taxes on their profits.<\/p>\n<p>Tether trading takes up a significant portion of all trading volume, and has been the second most traded coin for months; with USDT pairings representing <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/currencies\/volume\/24-hour\/\">14.21%<\/a> of all crypto trading volume as of today.<\/p>\n<h2>More USDT Pairings<\/h2>\n<p>The largest exchange by volume, Binance, added USDT pairings in mid-2017, and currently allow direct USDT trading with seven of the most popular coins.<\/p>\n<p>They have recently expanded their Tether offering to include pairings with QTUM, which saw the coin jump 42% and fuelled speculation that it is this pairing that is driving further demand for Tether.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you Trust Tether?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2201\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2201\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tether-small-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tether-small-cover.jpg 482w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/tether-small-cover-300x137.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tether converts cash into digital currency, to anchor or tether the value to the price of national currencies like the US dollar, the Euro, and the Yen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The currency\u00a0has come under intense scrutiny over the past few months after they confirmed that the relationship with their financial auditor, Friedman LLP, had come to an end.<\/p>\n<p>This raised doubts over the legitimacy of Tethers claim to be backed 100% by USD, and caused concern that Tether could be propping up the market with false funds.<\/p>\n<p>Although Tether released no official statement on the uncertainty and declined to comment during\u00a0interviews, the Tether website states that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Tether Platform currencies are 100% backed by actual fiat currency assets in our reserve account. Tethers are redeemable and exchangeable pursuant to Tether Limited\u2019s terms of service. The conversion rate is 1 tether USDT equals 1 USD.<\/i><i>The Tether Platform is fully reserved when the sum of all tethers in circulation is less than or equal to the balance of fiat currency held in our reserve. Through our Transparency page, anyone can view both of these numbers in near real-time.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trueusd.com\">TrueUSD<\/a> earlier this year created a competitor for Tether, and just this month Bittrex announced that they will be listing it.
