{"id":383556,"date":"2023-12-20T16:20:13","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T16:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=383556"},"modified":"2023-12-20T16:17:04","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T16:17:04","slug":"ledger-pledges-full-compensation-for-victims-of-600k-connectkit-exploit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ledger-pledges-full-compensation-for-victims-of-600k-connectkit-exploit\/","title":{"rendered":"Ledger pledges full compensation for victims of $600k ConnectKit exploit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hardware wallet provider Ledger has announced it will fully reimburse users impacted by the vulnerability that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/users-warned-to-avoid-connecting-to-dapps-for-now-as-ledger-confirms-compromised-library\/\">compromised<\/a> its <span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">ConnectKit\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q\">library<\/span><span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"> last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the firm promised to disable blind signing\u2014a process where users approve transactions without verifying their content\u2014on its devices for Ethereum virtual machine (EVM)-compatible decentralized applications (dApps) by June 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>$600k stolen<\/h2>\n<p>In a Dec. 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ledger\/status\/1737457365526470665?t=eu7zPBSVDF8RqbIFDU6QLg&s=19\">statement<\/a> on X (formerly Twitter), the firm revealed that its\u00a0<span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">ConnectKit\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q\">library<\/span><span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"> compromise resulted in the theft of approximately $600,000 in digital assets from users who blind-signed on EVM dApps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ledger\/\">Ledger<\/a> affirmed its commitment to compensating the affected individuals by February 2024 and disclosed its active engagement with these users.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 14, <em>CryptoSlate<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/understanding-the-ledger-library-exploit\/\">reported<\/a> that Ledger's <span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">ConnectKit\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q\">library was hacked by attackers who replaced a genuine version with a malicious file that redirects funds to a wallet controlled by the hacker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The breach impacted several prominent DeFi projects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/sushiswap\/\">SushiSwap<\/a>, which immediately advised their users not to interact with the frontend of their websites.<\/p>\n<h2>Bolstering security<\/h2>\n<p>While Ledger immediately pushed an update to rectify the situation, the firm has further\u00a0pledged to continue its focus on bolstering security measures to safeguard the ecosystem and prevent future occurrences.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this commitment, Ledger intends to collaborate with the dApp ecosystem to implement Clear Signing\u2014a process allowing users to verify all transaction details before approving them\u2014and phase out the Blind Signing feature from its devices by June 2024.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our commitment is to work with the community and DApp ecosystem to allow Clear Signing so users can verify all transactions on Ledger devices before signing. This will lead to a new standard to protect users and encourage Clear Signing across DApps,&#8221; Ledger wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the firm, Clear Signing will empower users to verify all transactions on their devices before signing, serving as an effective measure to mitigate front-end attacks on cryptocurrency platforms.<\/p>\n<p>It added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Front-end attacks have happened many times before and will continue to plague our ecosystem. The only foolproof countermeasure for this type of attack is to <span class=\"r-b88u0q\">always verify <\/span>what you consent to on your device.
