{"id":375373,"date":"2023-11-20T21:08:29","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T21:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=375373"},"modified":"2023-11-20T21:08:29","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T21:08:29","slug":"bullish-buys-coindesk-as-crypto-media-shakeups-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bullish-buys-coindesk-as-crypto-media-shakeups-continue\/","title":{"rendered":"Bullish buys CoinDesk as crypto media shakeups continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The sale of cryptocurrency news site <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/coindesk\/\">CoinDesk<\/a> to a new owner has concluded, according to an announcement from the purchasing firm on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20231120856497\/en\/Bullish-Acquires-CoinDesk-from-Digital-Currency-Group\">Nov. 20<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bullish, a firm operated by former New York Stock Exchange President Tom Farley, said that it acquired the news site from its previous owner, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/digital-currency-group\/\">Digital Currency Group<\/a> (DCG). CoinDesk will remain an independent subsidiary and will maintain its current leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Bullish said that it would &#8220;immediately inject capital&#8221; into CoinDesk in order to promote the launch of new products, events, and services.<\/p>\n<p>The purchasing company did not disclose the size of the transaction. However, a previous offer from another group of investors in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/125m-coindesk-deal-may-be-in-final-stages\/\">July<\/a> was reported to be worth approximately $125 million. DCG itself purchased CoinDesk for $500,000 in 2016.<\/p>\n<h2>Bullish involved in Block.one, FTX<\/h2>\n<p>CoinDesk's new owner, Bullish, is a firm that is highly involved in the crypto industry. Bullish said today that its crypto exchange has seen over $300 billion in trading volume since its November 2021 launch. Bullish was established by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/block-one\/\">Block.one<\/a>, the company behind <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/eos\/\">EOS<\/a> \u2014 a blockchain with a crypto token that ranked among the top ten in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bullish is also a major contender in the revival of <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ftx\/\">FTX<\/a>, as it is <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/former-nysc-president-two-others-vying-to-buy-and-revive-ftx\/\">vying against two other investors<\/a> to purchase Sam Bankman-Fried's failed crypto exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Bullish's involvement in the crypto sector has led to criticism among other members of the industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/jason-yanowitz\/\">Jason Yanowitz<\/a>, founder of competing crypto news site Blockworks, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jasonyanowitz\/status\/1726611872353591392\">called the deal<\/a> &#8220;bad for our industry.&#8221; He argued that the purchase &#8220;crushes the editorial integrity of the [CoinDesk] brand&#8221; and suggested that the deal introduces biases.<\/p>\n<p>However, CoinDesk's industry ties are not entirely new. Its former owner, DCG, owns several high-profile cryptocurrency firms, including the crypto services firm <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/genesis\/\">Genesis<\/a> and the asset manager <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/grayscale-investments\/\">Grayscale<\/a>. CoinDesk typically disclosed that it shared a parent company with those firms whenever it covered any related developments.<\/p>\n<p>Past acquisitions have provoked similar controversy due to possible influence from a buying company. For instance, crypto VC firm Foresight Ventures purchased The Block on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/singaporean-vc-firm-foresight-ventures-buys-80-stake-in-the-block\/\">Nov. 13, 2023<\/a>.
