Almost all open source blockchain projects operate as meritocracies in which past experience or reputation don't matter \u2014 virtually anybody is able to submit code to the Bitcoin Core project, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase has recently announced their commitment to contribute to the development of innovative blockchain technologies with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/introducing-the-coinbase-protocol-team-3bc1e9a63614\">Coinbase Protocol Team<\/a>. The new team has been assembled with the intent of assisting with fundamental breakthroughs in cryptography, permissionless consensus, and decentralized computation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Introducing the Coinbase Protocol Team<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7IcoUXH7Wc\">https:\/\/t.co\/7IcoUXH7Wc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Coinbase (@coinbase) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coinbase\/status\/974681101854633985?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 16, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/introducing-the-coinbase-protocol-team-3bc1e9a63614\">announcement<\/a>, released via the Coinbase Blog, Coinbase Engineering Director Varun Srinivasan states that the Protocol Team will be focusing on projects such as payment channels, off-chain computation, proof-of-stake blockchains, and trustless light clients. The team will operate with a collaborative perspective, working alongside other development teams active in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Srinivasan highlights Coinbase\u2019s emphasis on fostering developing greater financial equality and accessibility in the statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cCryptocurrencies and decentralized protocols will underpin an open financial system that brings greater equality of opportunity to the world\u2026 This is why we\u2019re formally announcing the Coinbase Protocol team.
