Of these, 47 of those cases were related to digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those actions are accounted for by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-suing-sbf-ftx-and-alameda-for-commodities-law-violations\/\">charges<\/a> alleging that <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/sam-bankman-fried\/\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ftx\/\">FTX<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/alameda-research\/\">Alameda Research<\/a>, and three associates carried out a fraudulent commodity scheme that involved misappropriation and illegal offerings, leading customers to lose $8 billion in funds. Those charges are separate from the Department of Justice (DOJ)'s criminal charges, on which Bankman-Fried was <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/billions-in-user-funds-were-lost-crypto-community-reacts-to-sbf-guilty-verdict\/\">recently convicted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another CFTC action <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-sues-binance-over-alleged-breaking-of-trading-and-derivatives-rules\/\">targeted Binance<\/a> and related companies, founder <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/changpeng-zhao\/\">Changpeng Zhao<\/a>, and former chief compliance officer Samuel Lim. Two other actions targeted the failed lending company <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/celsius-network\/\">Celsius<\/a> and its former CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/alex-mashinsky\/\">Alex Mashinsky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Other actions involved lesser-known platforms<\/h2>\n<p>The CFTC also targeted Mango Markets hacker <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/mango-markets-exploiter-faces-new-set-of-charges-from-the-cftc\/\">Avraham Eisenberg<\/a>, who is said to have used a &#8220;complex manipulation strategy&#8221; to steal $110 million of crypto.<\/p>\n<p>The agency additionally won a victory against <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-fines-ooki-dao-643k-after-court-victory\/\">Ooki DAO<\/a> in a significant case that allowed the decentralized group behind the platform to be held legally responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC also targeted Digitex LLC and other parties that illegally offered futures transactions and attempted to manipulate the price of the Digitex Futures token.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the CFTC described <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/mirror-trading-international-to-pay-1-7b-in-restitution-to-victims-of-bitcoin-investment-scam\/\">Mirror Trading International's<\/a> record-breaking civil monetary penalty, charges <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-settles-charges-against-companies-behind-0x-zrx-two-other-defi-protocols\/\">against three DeFi platforms<\/a>, and an enforcement sweep against 14 entities that offered unregistered forex and digital asset services.<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC said that its 96 enforcement actions resulted in more than $4.3 billion in penalties and other fines but did not provide a subtotal for its 47 crypto actions.<\/p>\n<p>The agency released a similar enforcement report in <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/cftc-aggressively-enforced-actions-against-18-crypto-related-cases-in-2022\/\">October 2022<\/a>, at which time it said that it carried out 18 enforcement actions during the fiscal year.
