As a decentralized currency, Bitcoin<\/a> is subject to several eccentricities that traditional fiat currencies avoid. For instance, while global trends can impact the value of a nation\u2019s currency, it\u2019s not subject to the actions and reactions of each country.<\/p>\n

Digital currencies don\u2019t have that luxury, and the unique actions of different countries have a significant impact on global crypto markets. Theoretically, digital currencies operate outside of the official purview of any central government, but regulatory actions enacted against crypto exchanges or ICOs effectively limit their implementation in various countries.<\/p>\n

In February 2017, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), issued a statement that \u201cit would block access to all domestic and foreign cryptocurrency exchanges and ICO websites.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Throughout most of 2017, cryptocurrencies operated in a free market that many compared to a financial wild west. There was and continues to be sprawling development, and conscientious investors felt a proper measure of excitement and hesitation.<\/p>\n

Apparently, governments feel the same way.<\/p>\n

When cryptocurrencies were a niche preoccupation for nerds, it was easy for governments to ignore their use and proliferation. However, as interest in digital currencies spiked last year and their collective market cap swelled to more than $850 billion, governments started to take regulatory action.<\/p>\n

The Rush to Regulate<\/h2>\n

The People's Bank of China is the central bank of the People's Republic of China with the power to carry out monetary policy and regulate financial institutions in mainland China.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Although many crypto enthusiasts champion<\/a> additional oversight, markets consistently panic at the mere mention of regulatory rumors.<\/p>\n

Last year, China was the first country to take broad action on cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n

In September, China banned ICOs from operating within their borders. Bitcoin subsequently dropped<\/a> by nearly 25%.<\/h3>\n

Recently, South Korea roiled crypto markets<\/a> when it made fuzzy promises to regulate digital currencies. Similar instances in Japan, India, and the United States had a similar effect on crypto markets.<\/p>\n

When news broke last week that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued target subpoenas on ICOs suspected of violating securities law, concerns of government action seemed to hit a fever pitch.<\/p>\n

Finally, Some Good News<\/h2>\n

Zhou Xiaochuan is a Chinese economist, reformist and bureaucrat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

That\u2019s why it was such a relief when the leader of China\u2019s central bank, Zhou Xiaochuan, announced that China would move slowly when considering additional regulation for digital currencies.<\/p>\n

Xiaochuan's\u00a0comments came at the National People\u2019s Congress where he detailed the country\u2019s plans for financial reform and development.<\/p>\n

According to media outlets, Zhou described digital currency as an inevitable part of the future financial system, and he cautioned against the speculative projects that have made overnight millionaires but that have endangered the viability and sustainability of financial markets.<\/p>\n

Zhou slammed the ICO boom and the high-risk investments that, at least to some degree, defined crypto\u2019s rise last year:<\/p>\n

\u201cLots of cryptocurrencies have seen explosive growth which can bring significant negative impact on consumers and retail investors.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Zhou indicated China\u2019s positive outlook on blockchain technology and sustainable development. On the topic, he said<\/a>,<\/p>\n

\u201cFor blockchain projects with technological potentials, they should conduct thorough testing before rolling out services. Otherwise, a reckless expansion may incur serious security and financial stability issues.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Zhou\u2019s comments and China\u2019s general on the crypto movement are similar to those of the SEC. In an official statement on cryptocurrencies and ICOs, the SEC wrote<\/a>,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology on which cryptocurrencies and ICOs are based may prove to be disruptive, transformative and efficiency enhancing. I am confident that developers in fintech will help facilitate capital formation and provide promising investment opportunities for institutional and Main Street investors alike.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, there is emerging confidence in the technology that powers cryptocurrencies and governments are taking a slow approach to digital currency implementation.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s fair to question its inevitability, but it\u2019s definitely good news that China and other leading nations are giving crypto an opportunity to develop and mature before making sweeping judgments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
