{"id":353287,"date":"2023-08-28T17:40:33","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T16:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=353287"},"modified":"2023-08-28T17:43:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T16:43:04","slug":"blackrock-deepens-bitcoin-bet-ups-its-stake-in-top-miners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrock-deepens-bitcoin-bet-ups-its-stake-in-top-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"BlackRock&#8217;s Bitcoin strategy involves investments in top mining companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The world's largest asset manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/blackrock\/\">BlackRock<\/a>, is increasing its exposure to Bitcoin by investing in the top five miners of the flagship digital asset.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>CompaniesMarketCap<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/companiesmarketcap.com\/bitcoin-mining\/largest-bitcoin-mining-companies-by-marketcap\/\">index<\/a>, the top five Bitcoin miners are Riot Platforms, worth $1.92 billion; Marathon Digital, $1.83 billion; Cipher<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/cipher-mining\/\"> Mining<\/a>, $0.74 million; Hut 8 Mining, $0.5 billion; and TeraWulf Inc, $0.41 billion. Of these five, it is only Hut 8 that BlackRock has yet to invest in.<\/p>\n<p>Due to Bitcoin's recent price struggles, these miners have lost between 11% and 42% of their stock value in the past month. BlackRock took advantage of this dip to increase its position as a significant shareholder across these firms.<\/p>\n<p>Per available data, the asset manager increased its holdings to 6.14% in <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/shareholders\/shareholders.html?symb=RIOT&subView=institutional\">Riot<\/a> shares, 6.44% at <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/shareholders\/shareholders.html?symb=MARA&subView=institutional\">Marathon Digital<\/a>, 0.88% in <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/shareholders\/shareholders.html?symb=CIFR&subView=institutional\">Cipher Mining<\/a>, and 2.88% in <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/shareholders\/shareholders.html?symb=WULF&subView=institutional\">TeraWulf<\/a>. Its total holdings in these miners amount to approximately $411.54 million.<\/p>\n<h2>Bitcoin ETF<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, mining is one of the many ways BlackRock has exposure to BTC. The asset manager has a <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrock-files-for-spot-bitcoin-etf-coinbase-to-serve-as-custodian-for-btc-holdings\/\">pending application<\/a> before the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to list a spot Bitcoin ETF.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the asset manager's application triggered a wave of similar applications from other traditional financial institutions like Invesco, Fidelity Investments, Ark Invest, and others. At the time, <em>CryptoSlate<\/em> Research <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrocks-bitcoin-etf-filing-fuels-u-s-accumulation\/\">pointed out<\/a> that the flurry of applications sparked a massive BTC accumulation within the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the firm's CEO Larry Fink also <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrock-ceo-larry-fink-likens-crypto-to-digitizing-gold-praises-bitcoin-as-an-international-asset\/\">revealed<\/a> its changed approach toward crypto investments. Fink said the flagship digital asset was digitalizing gold, adding that it was an &#8220;international asset.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In one of his interviews, Fink said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Bitcoin is not based on any one currency, and so it can represent an asset that people can play as an alternative. It\u2019s digitalizing gold in many ways.
