The new investment vehicle will expose investors to the four cryptocurrencies traded on Coinbase\u2019s GDAX exchange and marks the platform\u2019s first push into asset management services.<\/p>\n<p>The new asset management service was announced via Twitter and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/announcing-coinbase-index-fund-3925fbf548db\">Medium<\/a> earlier today and offers investors the opportunity to access diversified exposure to an entire asset class as opposed to individual assets.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our plan for Asset Management:<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: offer Coinbase Index Fund to US-resident, accredited investors <\/p>\n<p>Step 2: make available to all investors<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re working on launching more funds which cover a broader range of digital assets. Stay tuned.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Coinbase (@coinbase) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coinbase\/status\/971156625951145985?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Reuben Bramanathan, a product manager as Coinbase, explained via Medium that the launch of the fund is intended to provide both new and institutional investors with the ability to invest in the potential of blockchain-based digital assets as a whole:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cWe are noticing people coming to the space for the first time, being excited about cryptocurrencies, but not knowing where to start, so we\u2019re excited to give people the ability to get broad exposure to the entire asset class rather than having to select individual investments.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Index Fund Composition<\/h2>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/am.coinbase.com\/\">Coinbase index fund<\/a> will be overseen by a newly-minted subsidiary called Coinbase Asset Management and will be available to US-based accredited investors only. The fund will possess a minimum investment of $10,000 USD and charge a 2% annual management fee with no additional performance fees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35050\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/screen1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/screen1.png 676w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/screen1-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At launch, the fund will include the four cryptocurrencies that are currently traded on GDAX \u2014 Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and Ethereum, weighted by market cap. The composition of the index fund upon launch should resemble the current market capitalization of each respective currency:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin: 62%<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum: 27%<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin Cash: 7%<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Litecoin: 4%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a new cryptocurrency is listed on the GDAX exchange it will be automatically listed in the index fund, which will be rebalanced on an annual basis. Investors will be able to invest in the fund once monthly, with a quarterly redemption window that required 30 days notice. Investments can be made in USD, BTC, ETH, BCH, or LTC.<\/p>\n<p>The criteria required in order to invest in the Coinbase cryptocurrency index fund sets a high bar for potential investors, however \u2014 index fund investors must meet US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investor.gov\/additional-resources\/news-alerts\/alerts-bulletins\/investor-bulletin-accredited-investors\">SEC requirements<\/a> as an \u201caccredited investor.\u201d Investors must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have earned income that exceeded $200,000 (or $300,000 together with a spouse) over the last two years, and reasonably expect the same for the current year<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possess a net worth over $1 million, either alone or together with a spouse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coinbase has also announced the development of an array of alternative funds that will be available to all investors, covering a broader range of cryptocurrencies with less stringent investor requirements.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase is Opening Up Index Funds to Retail Investors<\/h2>\n<p>The new index fund possesses stringent qualification requirements in order to remain compliant, as catering to less established or experienced investors often comes with more complex regulatory challenges. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-03-06\/coinbase-offers-index-fund-tracking-cryptocurrencies-on-exchange\">interview<\/a> with Bloomberg, Bramanathan stated that the index fund is the first step in a process that will eventuate in the release of a retail index fund:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cWhen people think about a retail index fund, they\u2019re talking about an ETF, and that\u2019s obviously a long process to launch. Our objective here is to get to a position where we do launch a fund that\u2019s available to retail, but given the regulatory hurdles, we wanted to offer something to institutional and accredited to begin with.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to the new index fund, Coinbase has also announced the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/am.coinbase.com\/index\">Coinbase Index<\/a>, which tracks the performance of all of the digital assets listed on GDAX. The index will be subject to quarterly review by the newly-formed Coinbase Index Committee and will be reconstituted each time that a new asset is listed on GDAX.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35049\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/index.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/index.png 1600w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/index-1536x782.png 1536w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/index-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/index-768x391.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/index-1024x522.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Coinbase isn\u2019t the first platform to launch a passive cryptocurrency index fund and follows in the footsteps of services such as Bitwise Investment\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitwiseinvestments.com\/\">HODL 10 Index<\/a>.
