{"id":340095,"date":"2023-07-05T18:30:40","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T17:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=340095"},"modified":"2023-07-05T18:23:18","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T17:23:18","slug":"bitwage-halts-usdc-payments-for-us-residents-cites-strict-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitwage-halts-usdc-payments-for-us-residents-cites-strict-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitwage halts USDC payments for US residents, cites &#8216;strict regulations&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an email sent to customers on July 5, crypto payroll company Bitwage announced it would disable payments in USD Coin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\">USDC<\/a>) for U.S. residents.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past month, financial regulators in the U.S. have increased their regulatory scrutiny of the crypto space, bringing charges against major crypto firms, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/binance-and-cz-sued-by-sec-for-breaching-securities-law\/\">Binance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-sues-coinbase-for-multiple-alleged-securities-law-violations\/\">Coinbase<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto payment company warned that users who fail to remove the stablecoin would have their wallet and bank accounts reset by July 13. It added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If it is reset, you will have to set up your wallets and bank accounts again before we can deposit your next paycheck.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the firm noted that U.S. residents could continue to receive payments in other cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) and stablecoin alternatives like <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/celo-dollar\/\">CUSD<\/a> (Celo), Tether's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/tether\/\">USDT<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/multi-collateral-dai\/\">DAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bitwage said the new measure does not impact non-U.S. residents.<\/p>\n<p>The move is coming less than a week after the firm announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bitwage.com\/get-paid-in-digital-dollars\/\">partnership<\/a> with Vibrant &#8220;to make USD stablecoin payments seamless and zero-fee for remote workers worldwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bitrefill's market research consultant Matt Ahlborg <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattAhlborg\/status\/1676581202650595328?s=20\">pointed out<\/a> that this move could be positive for BTC as utility usage of the flagship asset has waned in recent years as stablecoins gained ground. Ahlborg added, &#8220;increasing restrictions on stablecoins will likely swing the pendulum back towards BTC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitwage.com\/\">website<\/a>, Bitwage has processed over $200 million in payroll payments and has over 50,000 workers registered on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is headquartered in San Francisco and has payroll service operations in the U.S., Europe, Latin America and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Bitwage had not responded to <em>CryptoSlate's<\/em> request for comment at press time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an email sent to customers on July 5, crypto payroll company Bitwage announced it would disable payments in USD Coin (USDC) for U.S. residents.
