{"id":337851,"date":"2023-06-27T16:59:47","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T15:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=337851"},"modified":"2023-06-30T22:33:25","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T21:33:25","slug":"first-leveraged-bitcoin-futures-etf-opens-for-trading-on-cboe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/first-leveraged-bitcoin-futures-etf-opens-for-trading-on-cboe\/","title":{"rendered":"First leveraged Bitcoin futures ETF opens for trading on CBOE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Volatility Shares 2x <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> Strategy ETF (BITX) opened for trading on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/06\/27\/the-first-leveraged-bitcoin-futures-etf-is-hitting-the-market-as-crypto-gains-new-momentum.html\">June 27<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chang Kim, COO at Volatility Shares, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There\u2019s a big audience that\u2019s already out there for leveraged-type products, and to sort of marry that with the intrinsic interest that there is in all things crypto \u2014 that\u2019s why we feel that there\u2019s a pretty good audience out there for this.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Several Bitcoin futures ETFs are available in the U.S. market, including the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.proshares.com\/our-etfs\/strategic\/bito\">BITO<\/a>) and the VanEck Bitcoin Strategy ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaneck.com\/us\/en\/investments\/bitcoin-strategy-etf-xbtf\/overview\/\">XBTF<\/a>). However, BITX is the first to offer leveraged trading.<\/p>\n<p>Leverage enables traders to open positions worth more than the money deposited &#8211; giving greater exposure to the underlying asset's price movements. The difference between the value of the trade and the trader's deposit (margin) is loaned by the platform provider.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/LearnAndProtect\/AdvisoriesAndArticles\/BitcoinFuturesETF.html\"> Commodities Futures Trading Commission<\/a> cautioned investors about management fees and other expenses on Bitcoin futures ETF &#8211; adding that disclosure and price risks are also factors to be wary about.<\/p>\n<h2>Flood of spot Bitcoin ETF applications<\/h2>\n<p>BlackRock filed for a spot Bitcoin ETF on <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/blackrock-files-for-spot-bitcoin-etf-coinbase-to-serve-as-custodian-for-btc-holdings\/\">June 15<\/a>, triggering a wave of other asset managers following suit, including WisdomTree and Invesco.<\/p>\n<p>The Securities Exchange Commission has not approved a spot Bitcoin ETF application, despite around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-06-20\/wisdomtree-files-for-us-spot-bitcoin-etf-on-heels-of-application-by-blackrock#xj4y7vzkg\">30<\/a> applications submitted since <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DocumentingBTC\/status\/1399107669567361025\">2013<\/a>. The agency has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/digital-assets\/2023\/06\/15\/blackrocks-spot-bitcoin-etf-plan-appears-to-be-a-case-of-perception-bending-reality\/\">denied<\/a> applications over concerns about the &#8220;opaque&#8221; spot market and manipulative price practices.<\/p>\n<p>Spot ETFs differ from futures by pricing based on the spot market, usually a mean average spot price from several exchanges. While futures ETFs rely on pricing based on the futures price.
