{"id":335576,"date":"2023-06-20T10:06:33","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T09:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=335576"},"modified":"2023-06-20T10:07:03","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T09:07:03","slug":"bitcoin-dominance-crosses-50-for-first-time-since-april-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-dominance-crosses-50-for-first-time-since-april-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin dominance crosses 50% for first time since April 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin now accounts for half of the total crypto market cap &#8211; crossing 50% dominance for the first time since April 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows Bitcoin dominance finding a local bottom at 39.9% around November 2021 &#8211; when FTX, and its native FTT token, collapsed, triggering narratives around worthless altcoins and Ponzinomics.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, BTC.D has been trending upwards, jumping to 47.7% from 43.5% in mid-March, as banking <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/contagion-from-svbs-collapse-highlights-need-for-banking-system-resilience-says-fed-official\/\">weakness<\/a> flipped investor sentiment toward &#8216;hard assets.'<\/p>\n<p>Another sharp uptick occurred in early June, moving from 47.4% to close the first week of the month at 49.1%, as U.S. regulatory enforcement actions <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/market-reports\/how-sec-legal-battles-with-binance-coinbase-could-reshape-crypto\/\">intensified<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_335580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335580\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-335580 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/BTC.D_2023-06-20_08-52-18-1024x464.png\" alt=\"Bitcoin dominance\" width=\"1024\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/BTC.D_2023-06-20_08-52-18-1024x464.png 1024w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/BTC.D_2023-06-20_08-52-18-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/BTC.D_2023-06-20_08-52-18-768x348.png 768w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/BTC.D_2023-06-20_08-52-18.png 1281w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-335580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: BTC.D on TradingView.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Bitcoin holds steady<\/h2>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sec-hostilities-see-bitcoin-dominance-spike-to-111-week-high\/\">reported<\/a> by <em>CryptoSlate <\/em>on June 12, the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement actions against Binance and Coinbase coincided with another uptick in Bitcoin dominance.<\/p>\n<p>In separate filings, the SEC alleged that both exchanges had violated securities laws, including operating as unregistered exchanges and offering unregistered securities.<\/p>\n<p>Across the two filings, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/speculation-mounts-that-a-regulatory-attack-on-bitcoin-is-coming\/\">19 altcoins<\/a> were named as unregistered securities by the agency. They were ATOM, BNB, BUSD, COTI, SOL, ADA, MATIC, FIL, SAND, MANA, ALGO, AXS, CHZ, NEAR, FLOW, ICP, VGX, DASH, and NEXO.<\/p>\n<p>The altcoins above suffered depressed price action. For example, since the SEC filing, BNB saw a peak-to-trough drawdown of 28%. Similarly, the next largest altcoin named in filings, ADA, experienced a peak-to-trough fall of 42%.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Bitcoin has remained relatively steady over the same period, losing 8% in the peak-to-trough move triggered by SEC enforcement actions.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the situation, editor at Adamant Research <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TuurDemeester\/status\/1670908933895229441\">Turr Demeester<\/a> said that although the Bitcoin dominance metric has flaws, the uptrend is still noteworthy. He added that an inevitable aspect of Bitcoinization &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">is for &#8220;crypto&#8221; to scatter in the wind.&#8221; With that, he signed off by saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">&#8220;The public is at long last learning to discern fool's gold from the real deal.<\/span>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the trend does not yet appear to be present within crypto ETP investments, as CoinShares revealed in its latest weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/altcoin-etps-see-inflows-amid-eth-btc-outflows-as-alts-recover\/\">report<\/a>.
