The zaps feature allows users to tip content creators using a Bitcoin Lightning-supported payment system.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_334969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-334969\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-334969 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/FytnpNeXwAM8pWV.jpg\" alt=\"Zaps on the Damus platform\" width=\"339\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/FytnpNeXwAM8pWV.jpg 339w, https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/FytnpNeXwAM8pWV-283x300.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-334969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DocumentingBTC\/status\/1669542047206834179\">@DocumentingBTC on Twitter.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On June 13, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/apple-threatens-to-remove-damus-from-app-store-over-bitcoin-lightning-payments\/\">Damus<\/a> disclosed that Apple threatened App Store removal due to the platform's zaps feature.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/nostr.how\/en\/zaps\">Zaps<\/a> refer to a Bitcoin Lightning-backed payment mechanism, enabling people to tip content creators on <a href=\"https:\/\/nostr.how\/en\/what-is-nostr\">Nostr<\/a> clients, such as Damus.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apple stated using zaps to pay for digital content violated its guidelines as its &#8220;in-app purchase&#8221; mechanism is the only one approved for use.<\/p>\n<p>Square CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jack\/status\/1668711207686094849\">Jack Dorsey<\/a> pointed out that tipping on posts is not related to selling digital content; instead, &#8220;It's<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> a form of feedback<\/span>.&#8221; Tagging Apple CEO Tim Cook, he asked why Apple is limiting people from sending Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Damus did not indicate whether it would comply and remove the zaps feature, only that the incident represented a &#8220;watershed moment&#8221; concerning freedom and people's right to transact peer-to-peer.<\/p>\n<p>However, on June 16, the social media platform posted a defiant tweet, saying Apple cannot stop the zaps from flowing. It added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">They are fighting a losing battle against open protocols. Arbitrarily restricting ways users can zap in our app will only hurt their customer base for no reason or gain<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A later tweet thread from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/damusapp\/status\/1669596108832505857\">Damus<\/a> mentioned that debanked people cannot use Apple Pay, whereas zaps have no such restrictions. The platform called Apple &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Truly evil and misguided<\/span>&#8221; for taking &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">30% of fundraisers and humanitarian aid posts.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Apple informed <em>CryptoSlate <\/em>that its guidelines allow for peer-to-peer monetary gifts without using &#8220;in-app purchase&#8221; if the gift is optional and the entire donation goes to the recipient.
