{"id":322118,"date":"2023-05-02T14:51:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T13:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=322118"},"modified":"2023-05-02T16:05:46","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T15:05:46","slug":"coinbase-launch-international-exchange-for-institutional-traders-outside-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-launch-international-exchange-for-institutional-traders-outside-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase launch international exchange for institutional traders outside US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coinbase has launched an international exchange \u2014 allowing institutional traders outside the United States to trade Bitcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">BTC<\/a>) and Ethereum (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a>) perpetual futures.<\/p>\n<p>Trades on the new platform would be settled in USD Coin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/usd-coin\/\">USDC<\/a>), and no fiat on-ramps would be required. It added that its perpetual futures contracts offer up to five times leverage.<\/p>\n<p>According to a May 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/blog\/blog\/introducing-coinbase-international-exchange?__cf_chl_f_tk=r2YMKmvEswxJ_w6C2hpz0Aj3sqOiJiLH8diBpIAiQww-1683033030-0-gaNycGzND7s\">statement<\/a>, the new exchange was launched on the back of its recent regulatory <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-obtains-license-to-operate-in-bermuda\/\">approval<\/a> from the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA). The exchange said it holds a Class F digital assets business license under the Digital Assets Business Act 2018 (as amended) and is licensed by the BMA.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase International Exchange will serve institutional clients only<\/h2>\n<p>Coinbase International Exchange (CIE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/international-exchange\">website<\/a>\u00a0showed that the exchange is only available &#8220;to non-US institutions in select jurisdictions.&#8221; The FAQ stated that the exchange plans to expand its platform to serve &#8220;non-US professional investors and advanced retail users in eligible countries&#8221; later this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Direct access trading via API is available to institutional clients in eligible, non-US jurisdictions. These products are not available to retail customers at this time. &#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Coinbase has faced increased regulatory scrutiny recently. The exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-receives-wells-notice-from-sec\/\">received<\/a> a Well Notice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over some of its products in March.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the exchange has been involved in a war of words with the financial regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-suggests-sec-action-is-motivated-by-gary-genslers-own-views\/\">arguing<\/a> that it does not list securities and also <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-files-action-against-sec\/\">filing<\/a> a legal action against the Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, CEO Brian Armstrong <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/armstrong-coinbase-leaving-the-us-for-uk-is-on-the-table\/\">hinted<\/a> that the firm might consider leaving the U.S. if the regulatory landscape does not improve.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase shares downgraded<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past month, the exchange has seen its shares shed more than 20% \u2014 dropping from as high as $72 in April to $50.1 as of May 1, according to Tradingview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-COIN\/\">data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/02\/citigroup-downgrades-this-crypto-trading-giant-over-uncertain-regulatory-path-.html\">reported<\/a> that leading financial institution Citi downgraded shares of the exchange earlier today to neutral \u2014 citing the current regulatory headwind the exchange is facing.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Armstrong <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbase-ceo-brian-armstrong-has-dumped-1-8m-worth-of-stocks-in-april\/\">offloaded<\/a> over $2 million of the exchange's stock during this period.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coinbase has launched an international exchange \u2014 allowing institutional traders outside the United States to trade Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) perpetual futures.
