{"id":321688,"date":"2023-05-01T14:45:08","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T13:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/?p=321688"},"modified":"2024-03-01T16:29:30","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T16:29:30","slug":"nigeria-sec-will-support-asset-backed-tokens-bloomberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nigeria-sec-will-support-asset-backed-tokens-bloomberg\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria SEC will support asset-backed tokens: Bloomberg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will allow tokenizing assets like equities, property, and debt.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Bloomberg May 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-01\/nigeria-s-sec-plans-to-allow-asset-backed-tokens-but-not-crypto\">report<\/a>, the Nigerian SEC's head of securities and investment services, Abdulkadir Abbas, said the financial regulator is processing applications for digital exchanges and firms. These firms will be sub-brokers for trading tokenized coins backed by assets, fund managers, tokenized coins issuers, and crowd-funding intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>Any firm that applies will first undergo a probationary period of 12 months, during which the SEC will monitor their services and determine their fitness to operate in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBy the 10th month, we should be able to make a determination whether to register the firm, extend the incubation period or even ask the firm to stop operation,\u201d Abbas said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Other jurisdictions working on assets tokenization<\/h2>\n<p>The idea of tokenizing assets is something that several jurisdictions are already considering. Singapore's Project Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/singapore-to-target-defi-potentials-with-new-jpmorgan-partnership\/\">focuses<\/a> on this in its collaboration between the country and several private financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Germany is also set to issue <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/germanys-new-regulation-paves-way-for-tokenized-digital-shares\/\">new laws<\/a> allowing the tokenization of equities registered on the blockchain. The Ministry of Finance referred to the product as crypto shares and claimed the purpose is to support private asset accumulation.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigeria SEC might also have a similar goal by using these digital assets to attract its large youth population to trade local equities.<\/p>\n<h2>Nigeria's crypto adoption remains high.<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the country's central bank's <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/nigerias-central-bank-orders-closure-of-crypto-related-accounts\/\">anti-crypto stand<\/a>, the industry has <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitcoin-premium-in-nigeria-tops-164-amid-demonetization\/\">thrived\u00a0in Africa<\/a>. Recently shuttered p2p exchange Paxful reported that Nigeria accounts for its largest cryptocurrency trading volume after the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the largest crypto exchange, Binance, <a href=\"https:\/\/nepza.gov.ng\/virtual-free-zones-nepza-binance-in-partnership\/\">partnered<\/a> with Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) to create the first virtual free zone.
